Chapter 8 - The Feast of San Juan

Six months later.
The Cárdenas estate was dressed in vibrant festive colors for the annual Feast of San Juan.
The long marble dining table, which had once been a cold stage for Verónica’s cruelty, was moved out into the central courtyard under the shade of two massive jacaranda trees filled with purple blossoms.
Over forty guests sat around the table: local community leaders, workers from Cárdenas Construction, Teresa and her son, local farmers who supplied the estate, and several elderly women from the local care home supported by the foundation.
At the head of the table sat Doña Mercedes, looking radiant, healthy, and full of life as she laughed and talked with her guests.
Beside her sat Alejandro, wearing a simple linen shirt, his face relaxed and entirely free of the tension that used to consume him.
Lucía and Teresa emerged from the kitchen carrying huge clay platters filled with platillos tradicionales: slow-cooked carnitas, handmade tamales wrapped in banana leaves, fresh guacamole, roasted nopal cacti, and bowls of rich mole poblano that filled the courtyard with an incredible aroma.
As Lucía set a fresh platter near the center of the table, Alejandro stood up, raising his glass of fresh hibiscus water.
The entire table fell quiet, looking toward the head of the house.
"Friends, family, and honored guests," Alejandro began, his voice clear and resonant. "A year ago, this house was quiet, cold, and filled with dark shadows. I was a rich man who had lost his way, believing that money could solve every problem."
He turned, looking directly at Doña Mercedes, then at Lucía.
"I learned that the most precious things in this life—love, loyalty, truth, and home—cannot be bought with checks or contracts. They are cooked slowly, with patience, honesty, and care."

Alejandro raised his glass higher. "To my mother, who never gave up her fight. To Lucía, who brought light back into our lives. And to this table, which will always remain open to those who seek warmth."
"¡Salud!" the entire crowd shouted in unison, clinking their glasses together under the purple jacaranda blossoms.
