Chapter 9 - The Unbroken Circle

As the afternoon turned into a golden evening, the music of a local three-piece acoustic band filled the courtyard with soft, traditional ballads.
Doña Mercedes sat near the fountain, watching young children play tag around the rose bushes.
Teresa’s son walked over to Doña Mercedes, bowing respectfully as he handed her a small wooden box he had carved himself during his free time.
"For you, Doña Mercedes," the young man said humbly. "To thank you and Don Alejandro for protecting my mother and giving me a future."
Doña Mercedes opened the box. Inside was a beautifully carved wooden spoon, polished smooth and inlaid with tiny pieces of mother-of-pearl.
"It is exquisite, son," Doña Mercedes said, tears of genuine happiness shining in her eyes. "Thank you."
A few yards away, Alejandro walked over to where Lucía was standing by the outdoor hearth, watching the sunset over the valley.
"You look contemplative, Lucía," Alejandro said softly, leaning his shoulder against the stone archway beside her.
"I was just thinking about my grandmother," Lucía admitted with a gentle smile. "She used to tell me that every house has a soul. If you don't feed the soul with kindness, the house decays from the inside out."
"You gave this house its soul back, Lucía," Alejandro said quietly, looking at her with deep, genuine respect. "And... you gave me mine back as well."
Lucía looked up at him, seeing the honest, grounded man he had become since shedding his arrogance and cold corporate defenses.
"You did the work yourself, Don Alejandro," she said. "You were brave enough to open your eyes."

"Call me Alejandro," he requested gently. "No more 'Don.' Here, at this table, we are equals."
Lucía smiled, her dark eyes shining in the warm twilight. "Alright, Alejandro."
