Chapter 5 - The Trap at San Miguel

The discovery of the cyanide-laced delivery box provided the state prosecutor’s office with undeniable physical evidence of premeditated attempted murder linked directly to Rodrigo Santos’s logistics firm.

Armed with federal search warrants, a joint task force of state police and federal investigators surrounded the private Santos compound in San Miguel de Allende at dawn on Thursday.

Alejandro sat inside a black armored SUV parked two blocks away, accompanied by Colonel Ramos, the head of the tactical state police unit.

"We have the perimeter sealed, Don Alejandro," Colonel Ramos reported, looking at a digital tablet displaying live infrared heat maps of the compound. "There are four individuals inside: Santos, two armed bodyguards, and your wife, Verónica."

"Make sure she is taken alive, Colonel," Alejandro said, his jaw locked tight. "I want her to stand before a judge and look my mother in the eye when the sentence is read."

At 6:15 AM, the tactical unit breached the heavy front gate of the compound with an armored vehicle. Flashing red lights and the sharp crack of flashbang grenades shattered the quiet morning in the historic town.

Within twelve minutes, the compound was secured without a single gunshot fired.

Alejandro stepped out of the SUV and walked into the grand courtyard of the Santos villa.

Rodrigo Santos was pressed against the cobblestones, his hands zip-tied behind his back, cursing furiously as two federal officers pulled him to his feet. His face was bruised, his expensive linen shirt torn.

A few yards away, two female officers led Verónica out through the front doors.

She was wearing a crumpled silk dress, her hair unkempt, her manicured nails broken. When she saw Alejandro standing near the fountain, her eyes widened with a mix of fury, embarrassment, and deep terror.

"Alejandro!" she screamed, trying to pull away from the officers. "It wasn't me! Rodrigo forced me to do it! He threatened to kill me if I didn't give him the access codes to your safe!"

Rodrigo Santos spat onto the floor, glaring at her with utter contempt. "Shut your mouth, you stupid witch! You were the one who came to me with the plan to starve the old woman!"

Alejandro walked slowly toward his wife. He stopped two feet away from her, looking down at the woman he had loved for six years, feeling nothing but a profound, cold disgust.

"You told me my mother was fading," Alejandro said, his voice dropping into a whisper that chilled her to the bone. "You told me her body was just giving up. But the only thing fading in this world, Verónica, is your freedom."

"Alejandro, please!" she sobbed, dropping to her knees on the stone floor. "I’m your wife! You can't let them take me to prison! Think of our reputation!"

"My mother is my family," Alejandro replied firmly, turning his back on her as the officers pulled her up and shoved her into the rear of a police transport van. "You were just an expensive mistake."
