Chapter 11 - Shadows at the Gates

The autumn wind howled against the reinforced glass of Moretti Manor, carrying with it a chill that felt entirely unseasonal. Inside the study, the fire crackled in the marble hearth, casting dancing orange shadows across the mahogany bookshelves. Dominic stood by the window, his gaze fixed on the iron gates of the estate half a mile down the private drive. In his hand, he held a black, unmarked envelope that had been delivered that morning by an anonymous courier.
Emily sat on the velvet armchair nearby, rocking baby Leo gently. The infant was fast asleep, his breathing soft and rhythmic. She could feel the palpable tension radiating from her husband. Dominic’s broad shoulders were rigid, and the muscle in his jaw ticked—a telltale sign that the calm facade he maintained for his family was being severely tested.
"Dominic?" Emily’s voice broke the heavy silence of the room. "What is it? You’ve been staring out that window for an hour."
Dominic turned slowly, his stormy gray eyes meeting hers. He walked over, kneeling beside her chair, and gently placed a calloused hand over hers. "It’s nothing you need to worry about, Emily. Just some old business wrapping up."
"Old business doesn't make you look like you're preparing for war," she replied softly, her gaze unwavering. She had learned over the years not to be intimidated by the dangerous man who commanded an empire, but rather to understand the weight he carried. "Read it to me."
Dominic hesitated, then handed her the thick card stock. Emblazoned on it was a single, chilling emblem: a silver serpent coiled around a dagger—the insignia of the Vane Syndicate, a faction in Chicago that Dominic had dismantled years ago. Inside, written in sharp, elegant calligraphy, were six words: The debt is still unpaid.

"Vane," Emily whispered, the name sending a cold shiver down her spine. "I thought they were all gone. After the warehouse fire..."
"So did I," Dominic said, his voice dropping an octave, cold and lethal. "Someone survived. Someone who thinks they can step into the vacuum and test the Moretti family." He stood up, towering over the room. "They picked the wrong time, and they picked the wrong family."
