Chapter 4 - The Midnight Trap

Midnight arrived with the weight of an execution.
The estate was dead silent. I crept down the dark grand staircase, holding Sophia’s small hand tightly in mine. I couldn't leave her alone in the nursery—not tonight.
We slipped into the grand library, where floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls and a crackling fire in the hearth cast long, dancing shadows across the leather furniture.
Nathan was waiting behind his massive desk. Sitting beside him was a tall, stern-faced man in a dark tailored suit—Federal Prosecutor Marcus Vance, Nathan's most trusted friend from law school.
"Elena," Nathan said, coming around the desk to welcome us. He looked at the photos on his tablet, his face a mask of hard, unyielding steel. "These photographs are extraordinary. Marcus’s team cross-referenced the batch number with the federal regulatory database. The toxin was manufactured illegally in a black-budget Hale Pharma lab."
"Is it enough to arrest her?" I asked desperately.
"It's enough to indict her, her father, and three senior executives at Hale Pharmaceuticals for attempted murder and corporate conspiracy," Prosecutor Vance replied in a deep, booming voice. "But we have a problem."
"What problem?"
"Vanessa’s legal team filed an emergency motion this evening," Nathan explained grimly. "Claiming that due to my 'rapidly deteriorating neurological health,' I am no longer mentally competent to make executive decisions. They are petitioning a judge at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning to grant Vanessa temporary emergency power of attorney."
I gasped. "Tomorrow? But the wedding is still six days away!"
"She realized I was onto something," Nathan said. "She's moving up the timeline. If the judge signs that emergency power of attorney tomorrow morning, she gets legal control of Cole Medical instantly, and she can have me involuntarily committed to a private psychiatric facility where she can finish dosing me in secret."
"Then we arrest her tonight!" I urged.
"We can't," Vance shook his head. "If we raid the estate tonight without catching her in the physical act of administering the poison, her lawyers will claim the vials were planted in her room by household staff—meaning you, Elena."
My blood ran cold.
"She has to attempt to administer the final dose herself," Nathan said, looking down at Sophia, who was quietly sitting on the leather sofa, coloring in her book. "She thinks I am completely unaware. She plans to put the final, lethal dose in my late-night tea tonight before the court hearing tomorrow."
"No," I pleaded, grabbing Nathan's arm. "Nathan, no! You can't drink that! It's too dangerous!"
"I won't drink it, Elena," Nathan said gently, placing his hand over mine. His touch sent a sudden, warm jolt through my chest. "We have installed hidden pinhole cameras in the dining room, the pantry, and the library. Every inch of this floor is being monitored live by federal agents parked two streets away."
He looked into my eyes, his gaze steady and filled with a deep, profound trust.
"I just need you and Sophia to do one last thing," Nathan murmured. "When she brings the tea, I need you to bring in the serving tray. You will be the official witness when the federal agents breach the room."

I looked at Nathan, then at my daughter.
"We are with you," I said firmly. "Until the end."
