Chapter 8 - Shadows in the Courtroom

The Dirksen Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago was cold, imposing, and filled with dozens of journalists when we arrived the following morning.
Julian Hale stood near the defense table—a tall, immaculate man in a charcoal suit with cold blue eyes that shared the same terrifying emptiness as his sister Vanessa’s. As we walked down the carpeted aisle of the courtroom, Julian leaned over to his high-priced attorney, a cruel, arrogant smirk playing on his lips.
"Mr. Cole," Julian murmured smoothly as we passed his table. "A pity we couldn't settle this like gentlemen. It would have saved your little charity a lot of public embarrassment."
Nathan didn't slow his stride. He pulled out a chair for me, then sat beside me, his hand resting securely over mine under the oak table.
"Keep your eyes on the law, Julian," Nathan replied without turning his head. "Because the last time a Hale tried to cross me, she ended up in a federal jumpsuit."
Julian’s jaw twitched, his polite smile faltering for a split second before the judge banged his gavel.
"Court is in session," Judge Harrison announced, his stern voice echoing off the high wood-paneled walls. "We are here to hear arguments regarding the emergency motion for an operational freeze on the Hale-Cole Medical Foundation."
Julian’s lead attorney stood up first, delivering a polished, aggressive opening statement. He spun a narrative of corporate overreach, claiming that Nathan Cole had taken advantage of the Hale family's legal crisis to "steal" valuable medical patents without proper market compensation.
"The Hale estate was systematically dismantled under intense public pressure," the attorney argued smoothly. "Julian Hale simply seeks to recover the intellectual property that rightfully belongs to the Hale family trust. Until a full audit is completed, the Foundation must suspend all clinical trials and surgical deployments."
Judge Harrison nodded slowly, looking over his spectacles at our table. "Mr. Cole, how does the defense respond?"
Sarah Vance stood up, stepping to the podium. "Your Honor, these patents were legally assigned to the non-profit foundation as part of the federal asset forfeiture agreement signed by the Department of Justice. The claim of duress is a complete fiction designed to extort voting shares from Cole Medical."
"The forfeiture agreement was signed by my father while under federal indictment!" Julian called out from his seat, making a show of righteous indignation. "He was mentally unfit!"
"Is that so, Mr. Hale?" a quiet, clear voice spoke up from the second row of the gallery.
Everyone turned.
I stood up slowly, clutching a small, leather-bound notebook in my hands—the original secondary ledger kept by Vanessa Hale during her poisoning plot, which had been cleared for public release by the prosecutor's office last month.
Judge Harrison frowned. "Mrs. Cole, you are not scheduled to testify—"
"Your Honor," Sarah Vance interrupted, interjecting smoothly. "Mrs. Cole holds the physical proof that Julian Hale was not an innocent bystander in Zurich. She holds the record of wire transfers made from Julian Hale’s personal Swiss holding account directly into the black-budget lab that manufactured the neurotoxin."

The entire courtroom went dead silent.
Julian’s face drained of every drop of color. He slammed his hands onto the table. "That’s a lie! I had nothing to do with Vanessa’s actions!"
