Chapter 5 - The Glass Shatters

At 1:15 a.m., the trap was sprung.
Nathan sat in the high-backed armchair by the library fire, a wool blanket draped over his legs, playing the role of an invalid suffering from advanced neurological collapse.
The heavy library door creaked open.
Vanessa stepped inside, carrying a silver serving tray. On it rested a single porcelain teacup, steam rising softly into the dim air. She wore a dark silk robe, her face smooth, serene, and devoid of any human empathy.
"Nathan, darling," she said softly, walking toward the fire. "You look so tired. I brought you your tea."
Nathan slowly lifted his head, making his eyes look unfocused and dull. "Vanessa...? Is that you? I... I can't hear you very well... my ears..."
A cold, triumphant smile touched Vanessa's lips. She set the tray down on the small table beside his chair.
"I know, sweetie," she crooned, picking up the cup and holding it out to him. "It will all be over soon. Just drink this. It will help you sleep."
From behind the heavy velvet curtains near the balcony, I stood with Sophia, holding my breath, my heart hammering like a drum.
Nathan reached out a trembling hand, taking the porcelain cup by the handle. He brought it halfway to his mouth.
"Vanessa," Nathan whispered softly, his voice suddenly losing all its weakness, becoming razor-sharp and cold as ice. "Does your father know you're using Batch OT-B-09?"
Vanessa froze.
The smile on her face withered instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated shock. "What... what did you say?"
Nathan set the teacup down on the table with a firm, decisive clink. He stood up from the armchair, throwing the blanket aside, standing at his full six-foot-two height, staring down at her with absolute authority.
"I asked if your father knows you've been poisoning me with Hale Pharma's unreleased neurotoxin," Nathan said, every word dripping with cold fury.
Vanessa took two steps back, her face turning as white as a sheet. "You... you're fine... Your ears—"
"My ears are recovering, thanks to the antidote given to me by medical specialists four days ago," Nathan revealed coldly. "I know everything, Vanessa. The offshore accounts, the insurance acceleration clause, the fake power of attorney filing for tomorrow morning."
Vanessa’s shock rapidly transformed into wild, desperate rage. She lunged for the teacup, intending to slam it against the brick hearth and destroy the physical evidence.
"Elena, now!" Nathan shouted.
I stepped out from behind the velvet curtains, holding my phone high, recording her every move in high-definition video.
Before Vanessa’s hand could reach the cup, the glass balcony doors shattered inward with a deafening crash!
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DON'T MOVE!"
Flashbangs illuminated the dark room in blinding white light. Half a dozen armed federal officers in black tactical gear flooded into the library through the shattered balcony doors and the main hallway, weapons trained directly on Vanessa.
Prosecutor Marcus Vance stepped through the doorway, holding a signed federal arrest warrant.
"Vanessa Hale," Vance announced sternly. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate espionage, and illegal distribution of Class-1 neurotoxins."
Vanessa stood trapped in the center of the room, her hair wild, her silk robe ruined by glass dust. As the officers stepped forward to force her hands behind her back, her eyes locked onto me—and then onto Sophia, who was standing bravely beside my legs.
"You..." Vanessa spat, her voice shrill with venomous hatred, glaring at my three-year-old daughter. "You little deaf brat... You ruined everything!"
Sophia didn't flinch. She didn't cry.
She stood tall beside me, raised her small hands, and deliberately signed two words directly at the woman being shoved into handcuffs:
BAD.
BYE-BYE.

Nathan let out a deep, emotional breath as the agents dragged the screaming, cursing heiress out of the estate into the rain-swept night.
The storm had finally broken.
