Chapter 7 - The Unbroken ThreadA year after the fall of Hale Pharmaceuticals, the world seemed to have finally caught up with the peace we had fought so hard to build. The Cole estate had shed its cold, imposing demeanor, replacing stark marble with soft rugs, framed family photos, and the constant, lively sound of Sophia’s giggles.

Nathan had officially adopted Sophia, making her legally his daughter. Every evening after work, no matter how exhausted he was from managing Cole Medical Systems, he sat on the floor with her, practicing both spoken speech and sign language. His signs were no longer terrible. He was fluent, smooth, and expressive—because love is the easiest language to learn when you actually care.
However, a ghost from the past was quietly lurking in the legal system.
While Vanessa and her father sat in federal prison, her older brother, Julian Hale—a quiet, ruthless venture capitalist who had spent the last decade running the family’s European holdings—returned to Chicago.
Julian had remained untouched by the original criminal trial because he had been living in Zurich during the poisoning plot. But he hadn't come back to Chicago to reconcile. He had come back to claim what he believed was his birthright: the remaining patents held by Cole Medical that had once belonged to the joint venture between the two families.
It was a crisp Thursday afternoon when Nathan’s chief legal advisor, Sarah Vance, walked into our private sunroom with a thick red folder.
"Julian Hale just filed a corporate reclamation suit in federal court," Sarah reported, her tone heavy with concern. "He’s claiming that the original patent transfers for the pediatric hearing technology were secured through fraudulent duress during his father's prosecution."
Nathan set down his coffee cup, his eyes narrowing into cold steel. "That technology belongs to the Hale-Cole Foundation now, Sarah. It’s providing free surgeries to thousands of low-income deaf children across the country."
"I know, Nathan," Sarah said quietly. "But Julian isn't just suing for money. He’s petitioning for an injunction to freeze all operations of the Foundation until the court settles the patent ownership. If the judge grants that injunction tomorrow morning, forty-two children scheduled for surgery next week will have their procedures canceled."
My hand flew to my chest. "He’s using sick children as leverage?"
"It’s a classic Hale tactic," Nathan said, standing up and wrapping a comforting arm around my waist. "He wants to force us into an out-of-court financial settlement that gives him twenty percent of Cole Medical's voting stock. He thinks I'll cave to protect the Foundation's reputation."
"Will the judge grant the freeze?" I asked, looking up at Nathan.
"Judge Harrison is presiding," Sarah replied grimly. "He was appointed fifteen years ago... by a committee that Julian Hale’s father funded."

Nathan looked out the window at the garden, where Sophia was playing with her golden retriever puppy. The sight of her pure, unbothered joy reinforced the iron resolve in his chest.
"Julian thinks he’s playing against the same man he saw two years ago," Nathan murmured softly. "He forgets that I didn't beat his sister alone. Call the legal team, Sarah. We’re going to federal court tomorrow. And we’re taking the truth with us."
