Chapter 1 - The Inherited Legacy

Elias lowered his newspaper, resting his cheap reading glasses on his knees as Mara stood before him in the crisp morning sun.

"I own three armani suits, Mara," Elias replied, a faint, wry smile touching his eyes. "Dominic bought them for me when he took over the Vescari shipping empire five years ago. But silk doesn't hold the warmth of the sun, and wool makes me itch."

Mara set down her tray onto the small wooden table beside his bench. Today, there was no shattered soup bowl. There was a fresh, steaming porcelain mug of chamomile tea, a warm bran muffin, and two small sugar packets.

"I brought two," she said quietly. "Don't let your son see."

Elias chuckled, a low, rasping sound that turned into a quiet cough. "Dominic sees everything in this city, my dear. But he has learned when to look away."

"He didn't look away yesterday," Mara noted, sitting on the edge of the stone bench, rubbing her wrapped left wrist. A light purple bruise had settled over her skin from her fall, a dull reminder of Rosalind Crane's cruelty.

"Dominic has spent his entire life surrounded by people who bow because they want his money or fear his name," Elias said, his expression softening as he looked at her. "He spent his childhood watching his mother fade away in a house full of servants who didn't care if she lived or died, so long as their paychecks arrived on time. When he saw you on that floor yesterday... defending a man you thought had nothing... he saw something he hasn't seen in thirty years."

"What's that?" Mara asked softly.

"Honesty."

Before Mara could reply, heavy, measured footsteps sounded along the crushed gravel path leading from the main estate.

Dominic Vescari emerged from beneath the shadow of the tall marble archway. He wore a dark charcoal suit, tailored to perfection, his silver-and-black watch catching the morning light. Behind him walked Marcus, his stoic, sharp-eyed chief of security.

Mara instinctively stood up, smoothing the front of her uniform.

"Mr. Vescari," she said respectfully.

Dominic paused, his dark eyes lingering on her face before shifting down to her bandaged wrist. A flick of tension passed over his jaw.

"Ms. Ellis," Dominic replied, his voice deep and smooth like polished wood. "You are not supposed to be working today. I instructed Dr. Hayes to give you three days of paid medical leave."

"I don't need three days of sitting in my apartment staring at the walls, Mr. Vescari," Mara said firmly, crossing her arms. "A sprained wrist doesn't stop me from checking inventory or making sure your father drinks his tea."

Elias smirked into his mug. "She's headstrong, Dominic. I told you."

Dominic didn't laugh. He stepped closer, stopping only two feet from Mara. The faint scent of sandalwood and rain clung to him. Standing at six-foot-two, his presence was overwhelming, yet there was a careful restraint in the way he stood, as if constantly mindful of his own power.

"Your position in this house has changed, Ms. Ellis," Dominic announced calmly.

Mara frowned. "Am I being fired?"

"No," Dominic said. "Mrs. Crane has been formally dismissed. Her severance was paid, and she has been banned from Vescari properties. As of eight o'clock this morning, you are the Head of Domestic Management for the estate."

Mara stared at him, her heart skipping a beat. "What? Mr. Vescari, I've only been here twenty-six days! I'm a housekeeper, not a manager."

"You are a woman who values human dignity over corporate hierarchy," Dominic corrected smoothly. "You managed to keep my father healthy and fed when twenty other staff members treated him like a shadow. You will oversee all domestic staff, set the schedules, and report directly to me."

"And the pay?" Elias chimed in with a grin.

"Triple her previous salary," Dominic said, keeping his eyes locked onto Mara's trembling gaze. "With full private medical benefits and housing accommodations on the estate grounds if she chooses."

Mara felt her throat tighten. Triple her salary meant no more choosing between groceries and electricity. It meant her small, drafty apartment in outer Bellhaven could finally be left behind.

"I... I don't know what to say," Mara whispered.

"Say yes, child," Elias urged gently. "Because if you don't, Dominic will just hire three more doctors to force me to eat boiled cabbage."

A soft, genuine laugh escaped Mara's lips—a sound so bright and unburdened that Dominic’s severe expression softened slightly.

"I accept, Mr. Vescari," Mara said, holding her head high. "Thank you."

"Good," Dominic said, reaching into his suit jacket and pulling out a silver key card. He handed it to her, his warm fingers brushing against hers for a fleeting second, sending a subtle jolt through her veins. "This gives you access to the main administrative wing and my private study. We have a great deal of work to do."

As Dominic turned to walk back toward the mansion, Marcus stepped up to his side, leaning in to whisper, "Boss, the Moretti family just requested an emergency meeting at the harbor docks. Don Moretti heard about the incident with Mrs. Crane yesterday. He thinks you're distracted."

Dominic didn't miss a beat. His eyes turned to steel. "Tell Don Moretti I'll meet him at midnight. And make sure he knows that anyone who confuses my domestic business with weakness won't live long enough to regret it."
