Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Silk

News of Dominic Vescari’s sudden obsession with his new domestic manager spread through Bellhaven’s elite circles like wildfire.

While the local staff respected Mara, the high-society elite who frequented Dominic’s legal political galas viewed her with intense jealousy and contempt.

None more so than Lady Victoria Vance.

Victoria was the daughter of Senator Vance, a powerful political figure whose campaign Dominic had financed for years. For three years, Victoria had positioned herself as the natural candidate to become the next Mrs. Vescari—a tall, razor-thin socialite with cold blue eyes and a cruel smile.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the estate hosted a high-level political fundraiser for the local port authority. Over two hundred wealthy guests in tuxedos and designer gowns strolled across the manicured lawns.

Mara was in her element, directing the catering staff, ensuring safety protocols were met, and making sure Elias was comfortable in his private shade pavilion away from the noise.

She wore an elegant, tailored navy-blue wrap dress that hugged her curves gracefully—a gift that had arrived at her cottage three days ago from Dominic with a handwritten note: Wear this for me.

As Mara adjusted a floral arrangement near the grand patio, Victoria Vance stepped into her path, flanked by two wealthy socialites.

Victoria looked Mara up and down with a sneer of absolute disgust.

"So," Victoria said loudly enough for nearby guests to hear. "You're the little charity case Dominic hired to clean his floors."

Mara kept her expression serene, smoothing her dress. "I am the Head of Domestic Management, Miss Vance. Welcome to the Vescari estate."

Victoria let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Domestic management? Is that what they're calling plump housekeepers who sleep their way into the master bedroom these days?"

A few nearby guests gasped softly, turning to watch the scene play out.

Mara didn't flinch. She stepped forward, standing tall, her presence calm and commanding.

"Miss Vance," Mara said clearly, her voice echoing across the patio. "My background is honest work. I earned every inch of respect I have in this house by treating people with dignity. Something you seem incapable of doing despite your expensive education."

Victoria’s face turned bright red with fury. "You arrogant little commoner! Do you really think Dominic Vescari would ever take a woman like you seriously? Look at you! You don't fit into his world. You're a temporary distraction until he needs a real wife who understands power!"

"She fits into my world perfectly," a dark, terrifying voice cut through the air.

The crowd parted instantly.

Dominic stepped onto the patio, dressed in a flawless black tuxedo. His eyes were burning with a lethal fury that made the surrounding guests step back in fear.

Behind him walked Senator Vance, looking utterly terrified at his daughter's mistake.

Dominic walked straight to Mara, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her firmly against his side in full view of two hundred high-society witnesses.

"Dominic..." Victoria stammered, her arrogance instantly evaporating. "I was just... I was explaining to her—"

"You were insulting the woman I love in my own home," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it felt like winter hitting the patio.

The entire crowd gasped. The woman I love.

Senator Vance rushed forward, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Dominic, please! Victoria was out of line, she didn't mean—"

"Senator," Dominic cut him off, staring directly into the old politician's eyes. "Your campaign funding from the Vescari group is terminated as of this second. And your family is no longer welcome on my property."

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears of humiliation. "Dominic! You're ruining my father's career over a maid?!"

Dominic looked at Victoria with utter coldness. "She is not a maid. She is the future mistress of this estate. Now get out before my security removes you by force."
