Chapter 8 - A Sanctuary Built for Two

By early summer, the dark clouds that had hung over the Vescari empire had completely cleared.

Julian Vance, Victoria Vance, and Rosalind Crane were all convicted in federal court, sentenced to long prison terms without the possibility of parole. The Vance family fortune was seized, effectively wiping out their influence in Bellhaven forever.

At the Vescari estate, life returned with a vibrant, joyful energy.

Dominic made good on a secret promise he had made to Mara months ago.

On a bright Saturday morning, Dominic guided Mara—wearing a blindfold—down a quiet paved road on the eastern ridge of the property, overlooking the ocean.

"Can I open my eyes yet?" Mara laughed softly, holding onto his arm for balance.

"Not yet," Dominic smiled, his voice full of excitement. "Three more steps."

He brought her to a stop, stepping behind her, his warm hands gently reaching around her head to untie the silk ribbon.

"Open them."

Mara opened her eyes—and gasped.

Standing before her was a breathtaking, custom-built brick building with large glass windows, a wrap-around porch, and a beautifully hand-carved wooden sign hanging over the double doors:

MARA’S BAKERY & PATISSERIE.

Tears filled Mara’s eyes instantly. She turned to look at Dominic in disbelief.

"Dominic... what is this?"

"This was your dream," Dominic said softly, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and resting his chin on her shoulder. "The bakery you lost in Philadelphia. I bought the equipment from the finest artisans in Italy. The kitchen is fully stocked. The front counter overlooks the sea."

Mara turned around in his arms, her cheeks wet with tears of joy. "You built me a bakery?"

"No," Dominic corrected with a soft grin. "I restored what the world took from you. You spent your life feeding others, Mara. Now you have a place of your own."

Mara threw her arms around his neck, kissing him deeply under the morning sun. Dominic held her tightly, lifting her slightly off her feet, his heart swelling with a happiness he had never thought possible.

Inside the bakery, sitting at a sunlit corner table with his newspaper and a fresh bran muffin, was Elias.

"Well?" Elias called out through the open window with a wide smile. "Are you two going to stand out there kissing all day, or is someone going to bake me a fresh loaf of sourdough?"

May you like

Mara laughed through her tears, wiping her cheeks. "I'm coming, Mr. Elias!"

"Call him Dad, Mara," Dominic whispered into her ear, his dark eyes shining with intense love. "He’s been calling you his daughter for three months anyway."
