Chapter 17 - The Calm Before the Light

Two weeks passed in serene, unbroken harmony.
The crisp New York autumn turned into a breathtaking display of amber, scarlet, and gold. The leaves carpeted the sprawling gardens of the Rinaldi estate, where the four boys spent their afternoons playing touch football on the lawn, their loud, joyful shouts echoing off the ancient stone walls.
Serena’s pregnancy had reached its final stretch—thirty-six weeks. Her baby bump was prominent and heavy, moving noticeably whenever the baby girl kicked, which seemed to happen every time Vittorio spoke near her.
On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, Serena sat in the newly renovated nursery on the second floor of the estate. The room was bathed in soft, warm sunlight streaming through large arched windows. The walls were painted a gentle, calming cream, adorned with hand-painted murals of woodland trees that Serena had spent the past month painting herself.
A white wooden crib sat in the center of the room, draped with a soft cashmere blanket that Vittorio’s mother had hand-knitted in Milan.
Vittorio walked into the room silently, stepping over the plush wool rug. He wore a simple gray henley shirt, his sleeves pushed up to his elbows, looking relaxed and deeply handsome.
He stood behind Serena’s wooden rocking chair, leaning down to wrap his broad arms around her shoulders, resting his chin against her neck.
"You should be resting, beautiful," Vittorio murmured, watching her fold a tiny pair of pink cotton socks.
"I am resting," Serena smiled, leaning her head back against his chest. "Fulfilling nest instincts is very therapeutic, you know."
Vittorio chuckled softly, a deep, resonant sound that made Serena’s heart warm. He reached down, placing his broad palm gently against her tight stomach.
Instantly, a distinct, firm kick pressed against his palm.
Vittorio’s amber eyes softened with an awe that never faded, no matter how many times he felt it.
"She’s strong," Vittorio whispered, marveling at the life moving beneath his hand. "Just like her mother."
"She’s going to rule this house," Serena teased softly. "With four older brothers protecting her, she’s going to be the most spoiled girl in Manhattan."
"She won't be spoiled," Vittorio smiled, kissing Serena’s temple. "She’ll be cherished. Just as her mother is."
Serena turned her face slightly, meeting his lips in a slow, sweet kiss that filled the warm nursery with a quiet, sacred intimacy.
Suddenly, a loud knock sounded at the nursery door.
Nine-year-old Mateo stepped into the room, holding a large wooden box bound with a red ribbon. Behind him came Marco, Luca, Leo, and little Lucia, all walking on tiptoes as if entering a holy sanctuary.
"Mom? Dad?" Mateo asked quietly. "Can we give the baby her gift now?"
Serena’s eyes lit up with joy. She sat up straight in her rocking chair. "A gift? From all of you?"
"We made it together!" Luca beamed, stepping forward and helping Mateo set the heavy wooden box on Serena’s lap.
Vittorio stepped around the rocking chair, standing beside Serena, his arm wrapped securely around her waist as the children clustered close around them.
Serena carefully untied the red ribbon and lifted the heavy wooden lid.
Inside lay a beautifully hand-carved wooden mobile designed to hang above the crib. Five intricate wooden figures swung gently from silver threads: four brave little knights holding wooden shields, and one little princess holding a tiny carved book.
On the wooden shields of the four knights were burned the initials: M, M, L, L.
And on the base of the mobile was carved a single sentence in Mateo’s neat handwriting:
To our little sister. We will protect you forever.
Serena gasped softly, a wave of overwhelming emotion rising in her chest. Tears welled in her eyes, sparkling like diamonds in the afternoon sunlight.
"Oh, sweethearts..." Serena choked out, her voice trembling. She reached out, pulling Mateo, Marco, Luca, Leo, and Lucia into a massive, warm hug, holding all five children tight against her heart. "This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen."
"Do you really like it, Mom?" Marco asked, looking up at her anxiously. "Leo accidentally dropped one of the wooden shields into the paint bucket, but Mateo cleaned it off!"
"I love it with all my heart," Serena cried happily, kissing each of their foreheads one by one. "Your baby sister is the luckiest girl in the world to have five amazing brothers like you."
Vittorio looked down at his wife and his five children wrapped in each other's arms in the middle of the bright nursery.
His amber eyes glistened with unshed tears. He reached down, wrapping his massive arms around all of them, pulling his entire family into a tight, unbroken circle of absolute love and protection.
"Thank you, my brave boys," Vittorio said, his deep voice thick with emotion. "And thank you, my sweet Lucia."

"We're a team, Dad!" Leo declared proudly from the center of the hug.
"Yes, we are, Leo," Vittorio whispered, looking at Serena over their children's heads, his eyes holding a devotion so profound it transcended words. "The strongest team in the world."
