Chapter 20 - To Family

One month later.
A brilliant winter snow had begun to fall softly over Manhattan, dusting the high glass windows and the manicured gardens of the Rinaldi estate with a layer of pure, sparkling white.
Inside, the grand dining room was bathed in the warm, golden glow of the crystal chandeliers. The long oak dining table was set for nine.
In the center of the table stood a massive bowl of steaming, glossy fettuccine Alfredo, a platter of braised veal cutlets, and fresh, crusty Italian bread made from scratch by Mateo and Serena.
The room was filled with the vibrant, joyful noise of a complete family.
At the head of the table sat Vittorio, looking powerful, relaxed, and radiantly happy in a dark cashmere sweater. Beside him sat Serena, glowing with health and beauty, holding one-month-old baby Elena in a soft sling against her chest.
Around the table sat Mateo, Marco, Luca, Leo, and Lucia, along with Vittorio’s mother and Judge Bellini, who had flown in from Milan to celebrate the baby’s christening.
Laughter echoed off the warm wood-paneled walls as Luca tried to demonstrate a magic trick with a linen napkin, accidentally dropping his fork into Leo’s water glass.
"Luca!" Leo giggled, splashing water back at his brother.
"Boys, manners," Vittorio scolded softly, though an amused, loving grin played on his handsome lips.
"Sorry, Dad!" Luca beamed, picking up his fork.
Serena looked around the table at every face—at her husband, whose amber eyes were fixed on her with unshakeable devotion; at her daughter Lucia, who was carefully feeding a piece of bread to her teddy bear; at her four brilliant, brave sons who had grown into young gentlemen; and at the tiny, sleeping baby girl resting against her heart.
She remembered the terrified nanny who had arrived at these gates years ago, entering a dark, silent world ruled by trauma and grief.
She remembered the long journey—the patience, the courage, the fierce battles fought in courtrooms and boardrooms, and the unwavering belief that love could heal even the deepest wounds.
Now, the shadows were gone forever. The light had won.
Vittorio turned to Serena, reaching under the white linen tablecloth to slide his broad, warm hand into hers. His fingers laced through hers with a familiar, comfortable squeeze that made her heart flutter just as fast as it ever had.
Vittorio lifted his glass of red wine, his amber eyes shining with a deep, sacred peace that filled the entire room.
"To the path that brought us together," Vittorio declared, his deep voice carrying across the table, hushing the children into a happy silence. "To the truth that set us free. And to the light that will guide us forever."
Vittorio looked directly into Serena’s eyes, his smile radiant and full of devotion.

"To family," Vittorio whispered.
"TO FAMILY!" the children cheered in unison, raising their juice glasses high into the air, their bright, joyful voices echoing through the warm, golden room, filling every corner of the house with the sweet, unmistakable, and eternal flavor of home.
