Chapter 5 - The Gala of Knives

The following Thursday evening, the world outside the Rinaldi estate gathered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual Manhattan Logistics & Development Gala—the premier event for the city's highest power brokers.
Vittorio had made an unexpected demand the day before: Serena was to attend with him.
"It is a strategic necessity," Vittorio had explained in his study. "Julian Vance will be there. He is spreading rumors in the financial press that my household is in disarray, that I am unfit to lead the board after my wife's passing. I need to present an image of absolute stability and strength. You will attend as my family's private educational director."
Now, standing before the full-length mirror in her suite, Serena barely recognized herself.
Mrs. Chen had arranged for a delivery from a high-end Fifth Avenue boutique earlier that afternoon. Serena wore an emerald-green silk gowne that draped gracefully down her frame, accentuating her waist and the delicate curve of her shoulders. Her dark hair was swept up in a loose, elegant chignon, and a simple diamond pendant—loaned from the estate's vault—glimmered at her collarbone.
A soft knock sounded at her door.
"Come in," Serena said.
The door opened, and Vittorio stepped inside. He was dressed in a tailored black tuxedo that fitted his broad shoulders and lean frame impeccably. He looked like an emperor who had stepped out of a classical painting.
Vittorio stopped dead in his tracks as his eyes swept over her.
For three full seconds, the master negotiator was rendered completely speechless. His amber eyes darkened, a raw, primal admiration flashing across his face before he caught himself.
"Miss Valente," Vittorio said, his voice raspy. "You... look extraordinary."
"Thank you," Serena said, feeling a blush warm her cheeks. "I hope I look the part."
"You look like you belong anywhere you choose to stand," Vittorio said softly. He stepped forward, offering her his arm. "Shall we?"
The gala was a glittering sea of diamonds, champagne glasses, and hushed corporate ruthlessness. Hundreds of wealthy elite floated across the marble halls beneath towering museum exhibits.
From the moment Vittorio and Serena entered, heads turned. Whispers rippled through the crowd. Vittorio walked with supreme confidence, his hand gently resting on the small of Serena’s back—a gesture that felt both possessively protective and intimately reassuring.
"Ah, Vittorio!" a booming voice cut through the hum of conversation.
Julian Vance stepped out from a group of investors, holding a crystal glass of scotch. He was dressed flawlessly, but his eyes were sharp and predatory as they locked onto Serena.
"Julian," Vittorio said coolly, stopping in front of him.
"I see you brought company," Vance said, leaning on his silver-tipped cane as he scanned Serena from head to toe. "I heard rumors that you had hired a new domestic handler for the quadruplets. I didn't realize she was so... decorative."
Serena felt a flash of anger at the deliberate insult, but before Vittorio could speak, she took a step forward, her chin lifted high.
"Mr. Vance," Serena said, her voice smooth and sweet as honey, yet sharp as steel. "I am Serena Valente, the director of private education for the Rinaldi family. And if your corporate intelligence is as sloppy as your manners, I fully understand why your company lost three major shipping contracts to Mr. Rinaldi last quarter."
A sudden, sharp silence fell over the surrounding guests. Several nearby executives choked on their drinks, trying to suppress gasps of laughter.
Julian Vance’s face turned deep crimson. His jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing into venomous slits. "You have a sharp tongue for an employee, young lady."
"She is not just an employee, Julian," Vittorio said, his voice dropping into a dark, lethal rumble as he stepped beside Serena, his arm wrapping firmly around her waist. "She speaks with my authority. Now if you will excuse us, we have more important conversations to attend to."
Vittorio led Serena away toward the balcony terrace, leaving Vance fuming in the center of the hall.
Out on the balcony, the night air was crisp and cool, offering a sweeping view of Central Park bathed in silver moonlight.
Vittorio leaned against the stone balustrade, looking down at Serena. A rare, genuine smile broke across his handsome face—a smile so warm and radiant it transformed his entire expression.
"That was magnificent," Vittorio murmured, a soft laugh escaping his chest. "You completely dismantled him in front of his primary lenders."
"He was insulting," Serena said, leaning against the rail beside him, her heart beating fast. "And I don't like bullies."
"Neither do I," Vittorio said softly.
He turned toward her, closing the distance between them. The laughter faded from his face, replaced by a deep, breathless intensity. The moonlight caught the silver threads at his temples, softening his hard features.
"Serena," Vittorio whispered, reaching out to touch her cheek. His thumb brushed over her skin with unbelievable gentleness. "You have brought life back into a house that was dead for eighteen months. You have given my sons a future. And you have..." He paused, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. "...you have undone me."
Serena looked up into his eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Vittorio..."
He leaned down, his dark head descending slowly. Serena closed her eyes, leaning in, her breath hitching as his warm lips brushed against hers in a tender, agonizingly sweet kiss that felt like thunder exploding beneath a quiet sky.
For a long moment, the world ceased to exist—the gala, the wealth, the danger, the past. There was only the heat of his mouth, the strength of his arms pulling her against his chest, and the undeniable truth that they had fallen hopelessly, irrevocably in love.
When he pulled back, his breathing was heavy, his eyes burning with intense devotion.
"I will protect you, Serena," Vittorio declared softly, his fingers tangled in her dark hair. "You and Lucia. No one will ever harm you again. I promise you that."
Before Serena could reply, her phone vibrated frantically inside her clutch bag.
She pulled it out, seeing Mrs. Chen’s name flashing on the screen. Panic spiked in Serena’s chest as she answered.
"Mrs. Chen? What's wrong?"
May you like
"Miss Serena!" Mrs. Chen’s voice came through the speaker, frantic and trembling with terror. "The security alarms in the east wing were breached! Someone bypassed the main gate! Lucia and the boys are missing!"
