Chapter 2 - Echoes of Retribution

The night air over the Cicero safehouse was thick with rain and tension. Salvatore Rossi stood in the shadow of a brick alleyway, a heavy obsidian overcoat draped over his shoulders, his hands encased in black leather gloves. Behind him, thirty of the Rossi family’s most elite soldiers stood in absolute, disciplined silence, their automatic weapons raised.
Salvatore checked his watch. 2:14 AM.
"Boss, the thermal imaging shows twelve targets inside," Luca whispered, adjusting his earpiece. "Darren Vance is in the basement kitchen, packing bags. The perimeter guards are rotating now."
"No survivors except Vance," Salvatore ordered, his voice like grinding stones. "Bring him to me alive. The rest... eliminate them."
With a silent hand signal, the assault began. The Rossi soldiers moved like ghosts. The heavy steel back door of the safehouse was breached with a muted, localized explosive charge. What followed was a masterclass in tactical brutality. Suppressed gunfire hissed through the corridors. The Russian mercenaries, caught completely off guard, fell one by one in pools of their own blood.
Salvatore walked through the front doors of the safehouse as the smoke cleared, stepping over the body of a fallen guard without a second glance. He walked with the calm, terrifying arrogance of a king reclaiming his land.
Down in the damp, dimly lit basement, Darren Vance was frantically shoving stacks of dirty money into a duffel bag. When the heavy wooden door was kicked off its hinges, Darren screamed, dropping his gun and scrambling backward against the concrete wall.
Two Rossi soldiers dragged Darren to his knees by his hair, forcing him to look up as Salvatore entered the room.
Darren’s face drained of color. He knew exactly who Salvatore was. Everyone in the Midwest underworld knew the face of the man who ruled Chicago. "Rossi... please! I didn't know! I didn't know that warehouse was yours! If this is about the territory, the Russians forced me—"
"Shut up," Salvatore said. He didn't raise his voice, yet the sheer authority in it made Darren choke on his own words.
Salvatore walked over, stopping right in front of the trembling man. He looked down at Darren with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust. "I don't give a damn about the warehouse, Vance. And I don't give a damn about the pathetic pennies you stole from me."
Darren blinked, confused and terrified. "Then... then what is this? Why are you doing this?"
Salvatore knelt down, bringing his face inches from Darren’s. The absolute malice radiating from the Don made Darren wet his pants. "Melanie Carter."
Darren’s eyes widened in sheer shock. "Melanie? That... that useless bitch? She’s nothing! She was going to go to the feds! She stole my laptop! I just taught her a lesson—"
Before Darren could finish the sentence, Salvatore’s fist slammed into his jaw with the force of a sledgehammer. The sound of bone shattering echoed through the basement. Darren collapsed to the floor, coughing up blood and broken teeth, screaming in agony.
Salvatore stood up, wiping a speck of blood from his leather glove with a handkerchief. "You broke her spine. You left her to die in the dark, starving and alone. You thought she had no one. You thought she was weak." Salvatore turned to Luca, his eyes dead and cold. "Break his legs. Both of them. Shatter his kneecaps so completely that no surgeon on earth will ever put them back together. Then throw him into the deepest cell in our private compound. He stays alive until I decide otherwise."
"No! Please! Mercy!" Darren shrieked as Luca’s men grabbed heavy iron crowbars.
Salvatore didn't look back as the sounds of fracturing bone and agonizing screams filled the basement. He walked out into the rain, pulling out his phone. He dialed his estate’s private medical line.
"How is she?" Salvatore asked the moment the doctor picked up.
May you like
"She woke up in a panic a few minutes ago, Don Salvatore, but she’s calm now," the doctor replied. "She... she asked if you were back yet."
A strange, unfamiliar warmth bloomed in Salvatore’s chest, cutting through the icy rage that usually defined his existence. "Tell her I am on my way home. And tell her the ghost that haunted her is gone forever."
