Chapter 4 - Sparks and Storms

By the second month of her stay at the Rossi estate, Melanie’s room had been transformed. Salvatore had ordered a state-of-the-art physical therapy gym to be built in the adjacent room. Dr. Aris, a world-renowned neurosurgeon flown in secretly from Switzerland, monitored her progress daily.

"The swelling is completely gone, Miss Carter," Dr. Aris explained during a morning examination, tapping a small reflex hammer against her knee. "The nerve pathways are intact, but they are dormant. The trauma caused a psychological and physiological blockage. We need intensive physical therapy to jumpstart the neural connection. It will be incredibly painful, and there are no guarantees."

"I want to try," Melanie said, her voice filled with a determination she hadn't felt in years. "I don't care how much it hurts."

Salvatore, who was standing by the door with his arms crossed over his chest, stepped forward. "I will be with you through every session."

The therapy began that afternoon, and it was a living hell. The physical therapist, a strict but kind woman named Elena, pushed Melanie to her absolute limits. They placed her in a specialized harness, trying to force her brain to send signals to her legs to support her weight.

"Come on, Melanie, just one step. Think about moving your right foot," Elena encouraged.

Melanie strained, every muscle in her upper body tensing, her face flushing as sweat poured down her neck. She stared at her right foot, begging it, crying out to it in her mind to just twitch. But nothing happened. Her legs remained completely dead weights.

"I can't... I can't do it!" Melanie sobbed, collapsing forward into the harness, her spirit breaking under the crushing weight of failure. "It's useless! I'm broken!"

Before Elena could assist her, Salvatore was there. He unhooked her from the harness himself, lifting her effortlessly into his strong arms. He held her close against his chest, walking over to a plush sofa in the corner of the gym. He sat down, keeping her tucked securely against his lap, refusing to let her go even as she sobbed uncontrollably into his shirt, soaking the expensive fabric with her tears.

"Shh... I've got you, cara. I've got you," Salvatore murmured, his large hand gently stroking her hair, his heart beating a steady, powerful rhythm against her cheek.

"I'm never going to walk again, Salvatore," she wailed, her fingers clutching his shirt. "You're wasting your time on me. You should just throw me out. I'm just a broken toy."

Salvatore gently but firmly gripped her chin, forcing her to look up into his fierce, darkened eyes. "Listen to me very carefully, Melanie Carter. If you never take another step for the rest of your life, you will still be the queen of this house. You will still sit at my table, you will still rule my heart, and you will still be the most valuable thing in my life. Your worth is not defined by whether you can walk. It is defined by who you are."

Melanie gasped, her breath catching in her throat. "Your... your heart?"

Salvatore’s gaze softened, a rare, breathtaking smile pulling at the corners of his lips. "Did you really think this was just about charity, Melanie? I am a selfish, ruthless man. I keep what I love. And I love you. From the moment I carried you out of that hellhole, my heart has belonged to you."

The raw confession silenced the storm inside her. Looking into his eyes, Melanie realized that the heavy, suffocating fear that had dictated her life for years had completely vanished, replaced by an overwhelming, incandescent warmth. She loved him too. She loved the monster who was a king to the world, but a gentle protector to her.

She leaned up, bridging the small distance between them, and pressed her lips to his.

The kiss started with a tentative, trembling softness, but the moment Salvatore realized what she was doing, a low growl escaped his throat. His arm tightened around her waist, pulling her flush against his massive frame as he deepened the kiss with a fierce, burning passion that consumed her entirely. It was a seal of a new beginning, a vow written in fire and devotion.
