Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

While love bloomed within the fortified walls of the Rossi estate, a deadly storm was brewing in the dark underbelly of Chicago. The Bratva, furious over the total annihilation of their safehouse and the loss of Darren Vance’s insider information, were seeking bloody revenge.

Inside a dimly lit cigar lounge downtown, Salvatore sat across from Nikolai Volkov, the brutal head of the Russian syndicate. The atmosphere was thick with hostility, heavily armed guards from both sides standing ready with their hands on their weapons.

"You crossed a line, Rossi," Nikolai sneered, taking a deep drag from his cigar. "You slaughtered twelve of my best men over a worthless low-level runner and a random whore. That girl had information that belonged to us."

Salvatore leaned back in his leather chair, calmly pouring himself a glass of scotch. He didn't look like a man under threat; he looked like a god deciding the fate of mortals. "The girl belongs to me, Volkov. Touch her, or even think about her name, and I will burn your entire syndicate to the ground and salt the earth so nothing ever grows again."

Nikolai laughed coldly. "You're getting soft, Salvatore. Falling for a broken cripple? It makes you weak. A man with an anchor around his neck is easy to drown."

Salvatore set his glass down. In a movement so fast the human eye could barely track it, he pulled a sleek black pistol from his jacket and fired a single shot. The bullet whizzed past Nikolai’s ear, shattering the expensive bottle of vodka on the shelf right behind his head.

The Russian guards instantly raised their weapons, but the Rossi soldiers matched them, clicks of safety levers echoing through the room.

Salvatore stood up, his eyes terrifyingly hollow. "The next bullet goes between your eyes, Nikolai. The Rossi family rules Chicago. Remember your place, or I will remind you with a bloodbath."

Without waiting for a response, Salvatore walked out, his men forming a flawless defensive wall around him.

However, back at the estate, a different kind of danger was brewing. One of the newly hired night nurses, a woman named Theresa, had been secretly paid off by the Bratva. While Melanie was sleeping peacefully after an exhausting physical therapy session, Theresa slipped into her room, holding a small syringe filled with a lethal dose of potassium chloride, designed to mimic a sudden cardiac arrest.

Theresa crept toward the bed, her hands shaking as she raised the syringe over Melanie’s IV line.

Just as the needle was about to pierce the rubber tube, a cold hand clamped around Theresa’s wrist like a steel vice. Theresa gasped in horror, turning around to find Salvatore standing behind her in the dark, his face a mask of absolute demonic rage. He had returned early from his meeting, his instincts warning him that something was wrong.

"Going somewhere?" Salvatore whispered, his voice sending a mortal chill down Theresa’s spine.

With a brutal twist, Salvatore snapped Theresa’s wrist, forcing her to drop the syringe. Before she could scream, he covered her mouth with his gloved hand and dragged her out of the room into the hallway, where Luca and four guards were waiting.

"Take her to the basement," Salvatore commanded, his eyes burning with a lethal fire. "Find out who paid her. And make sure she experiences the exact amount of pain she tried to inflict on my woman."

Salvatore took a deep breath, smoothing down his suit jacket before quietly slipping back into Melanie’s room. He walked over to her bed, watching her peaceful, sleeping face. He knelt down, kissing her hand gently.

"I will kill the whole world before I let anyone hurt you again, cara," he vowed in the silent darkness.
