Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

Three years later.

The summer sun was setting over the Atlantic Ocean as a luxury private jet glided smoothly through the clear twilight sky at 35,000 feet, heading back to Rome after a foundation conference in New York.

Inside the spacious, plush cabin of the Vane Global aircraft, soft ambient music played through the speakers.

Seven-year-old Maya sat at the leather table, diligently coloring a drawing of a Tuscan villa, while four-year-old Leo was happily building a tall tower out of wooden blocks on the carpeted floor.

Near the wide passenger window, I sat relaxed in a deep leather armchair, holding our newest addition—our four-month-old daughter, Elena—who was sleeping peacefully against my chest, her tiny tummy full after nursing.

Julian walked out from the forward office cabin, holding two cups of warm tea. He set the cups down, walked over, and sat on the plush leather ottoman directly in front of me.

He leaned down, gently kissing baby Elena’s soft forehead, then looked up into my eyes with that same intense, loving gray gaze that had captured my heart years ago.

“Is she sleeping?” Julian whispered softly.

“Like an angel,” I smiled, adjusting her light blanket. “No screaming at thirty thousand feet today.”

Julian chuckled softly, reaching out to wrap his long fingers around my hand, resting his chin against my knee as he looked out at the golden sunset painted across the clouds outside the window.

“Sometimes,” Julian murmured, his voice rich with quiet wonder, “I sit here and think about that flight four years ago. I think about how close I came to drowning in my own grief, and how one brave woman stepped across a curtain and changed my universe forever.”

I squeezed his hand, leaning down to press my lips against his hair.

“I wasn't trying to change the universe, Julian,” I whispered back softly. “I was just listening to a baby who needed help.”

Julian looked up, his smile radiating with absolute peace, love, and contentment.

“And you listened,” Julian said, pulling my hand to his lips and kissing my knuckles. “And because you did, we found home.”

Outside the window, the sun dipped below the horizon, bathing the sky in brilliant shades of gold and purple, holding our family safe above the clouds, bound forever by a love that nothing could ever break.
