Chapter 6 - The Battle of Villa Vane

The heavy steel panic room door sealed behind me with a mechanical click.

Inside the carpeted, climate-controlled room, I held Maya tight against my chest while Leo slept peacefully in a portable bassinet in the corner. Above us, the muffled sounds of shouting, glass breaking, and heavy footsteps echoed through the ceiling.

Every second stretched like an eternity.

Maya buried her face in my neck. “Is Daddy outside?”

“Shh, baby,” I whispered, fighting back tears of terror. “Mr. Julian is taking care of it. We're safe here.”

Twenty minutes felt like twenty years.

Finally, the electronic keypad outside the panic room chimed. The thick steel door hissed open, swinging outward.

Julian stood in the doorway.

His shirt collar was open, his dark hair damp with rain, and blood smeared across his left knuckles, but his posture was upright, victorious, and commanding. Marcus stood behind him, holding two restrained intruders in zip-ties.

“It’s over, Clara,” Julian said, stepping inside and reaching for my hand to lift me to my feet. “Italian Carabinieri have arrested Arthur two miles down the road. He was waiting in a getaway vehicle. He won't be getting bail this time.”

I threw my arms around Julian’s neck, weeping with pure relief. He wrapped his strong arms around my waist, lifting me slightly off the floor, burying his face in the crook of my neck.

“Are you hurt?” I sobbed, touching his bloodied knuckles.

“It’s not my blood,” Julian murmured softly. “They tried to reach this wing, Clara. I ensured they failed.”

That night, after the police had cleared the property and the estate settled back into quiet safety, Julian stayed in the nursery with me. We sat together on the wide window seat, watching the rain stop as the moon broke through the storm clouds.

“I’m filing for full international protective custody for you and Maya tomorrow,” Julian said, his hand resting over mine. “My legal teams in Ohio and Rome are initiating divorce and restraining proceedings against Arthur. He will spend years in prison for extortion, domestic abuse, and conspiracy.”

I looked at him, feeling a deep, profound gratitude that went beyond words. “Why are you fighting so hard for us, Julian?”

Julian turned to me, his dark gray eyes holding mine with breathtaking sincerity.

“Because the moment you held Leo on that plane,” Julian whispered, “you filled a void in my heart I thought would remain broken forever. I don't just want to protect you, Clara. I love you.”
