Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Night

For two weeks, Villa Vane became a sanctuary.

Maya thrived in the warm Tuscan sun, playing in the gardens with Maria, her laughter filling the ancient stone corridors. Leo began gaining weight, his cheeks turning rosy and healthy as I nursed him alongside Maya three times a day, supplemented by high-grade organic formulas recommended by Julian’s pediatric team.

Julian worked from his home office, but every evening at 6:00 PM, he closed his laptop. We ate dinner together in the garden terrace—a real family setting I had never experienced in my violent, stressful marriage with Arthur.

I watched Julian transform from a terrifying corporate mogul into a devoted, gentle father. He laughed when Maya covered his expensive silk tie in pasta sauce. He listened intently as I explained pediatric development milestones.

An undeniable warmth began to bloom between us—a quiet, magnetic pull that grew stronger with every shared glance across the nursery table.

But Arthur’s shadow was long.

On a rainy Tuesday night while the children were sleeping, alarm sirens suddenly echoed across the estate grounds.

Red security lights flashed in the hallway.

I jumped out of bed, rushing to the nursery wing. Julian was already there, holding a dark hand-gun, standing guard in front of the cribs while Marcus monitored a bank of security screens in the adjacent hallway.

“What’s happening?!” I gasped, pulling my robe around me.

“Someone cut the perimeter fence on the west side,” Marcus reported, his voice dark. “Three men entered the grounds. Local police are five minutes out.”

Through the rain-streaked window of the nursery, I saw flashlight beams cutting through the dark olive grove.

Arthur hadn't given up. Backed by wealthy, corrupt associates in Ohio, he had hired local mercenaries to breach the villa and snatch Maya to force me back into his custody.

Julian handed his weapon to Marcus, turned to me, and gripped my shoulders firmly.

“Stay in the panic room behind the library bookshelf with the children,” Julian ordered, his gray eyes burning with lethal determination. “Do not open the door for anyone except me or Marcus.”

“Julian, please be careful!” I cried, grabbing his lapels.

He looked at me, his gaze softening for a fraction of a second, and pressed a swift, fierce kiss to my forehead. “Nobody takes my family, Clara. Nobody.”
