Chapter 3 - The Shadow at Fiumicino

When the Boeing 777 touched down at Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport in Rome, the morning sun was rising over the tarmac in shades of brilliant gold.
I gathered Maya, who was rubbing her eyes, clutching her stuffed rabbit. “Thank you for the seat, Mr. Vane,” I said quietly, adjusting my heavy tote bag over my shoulder. “I hope Leo sleeps well.”
“Wait,” Julian said, standing up. He handed me a crisp black business card embossed with silver lettering: Vane Global Logistics & Maritime. “My car is waiting outside. Let me drive you to your destination.”
“No, really, we can take the airport train—”
“Clara,” he interrupted gently. “You are carrying a heavy suitcase, a toddler, and a secret that is making you look over your shoulder every thirty seconds. Let me drive you.”
My mouth went dry. Was I that obvious?
Before I could answer, a commotion echoed near the gate exit. Three men in dark suits were pushing through the international arrivals corridor. My heart dropped straight into my stomach.
Walking ahead of them was Arthur—my husband.
He looked unkempt, his eyes bloodshot, his jaw set in a violent, furious line. He was holding a tracking tablet in his hand. He had tracked my phone’s GPS the moment I landed in Europe.
“Clara!” Arthur roared, his voice echoing off the glass terminal walls, scaring passing tourists. “Get over here right now!”
Maya shrank behind my legs, trembling. “Daddy’s mad,” she whimpered.
“You took my daughter!” Arthur screamed, marching toward us, his hands balling into fists. “You think you can run to Italy with my kid, you crazy bitch? I’ll have you arrested for kidnapping!”
I backed away, terror paralyzing my limbs.
Before Arthur could take another step toward me, Marcus—Julian’s massive bodyguard—stepped directly into his path like an immovable wall of concrete.
“Move out of my way!” Arthur barked, shoving Marcus’s chest.
Marcus didn't even sway. He simply grabbed Arthur’s wrist, twisting it down with a smooth, effortless pressure that brought Arthur to his knees with a sharp cry of pain.
Julian stepped forward, shielding Maya and me behind his tailored suit. His aura shifted instantly—the gentle father disappeared, replaced by a ruthless, high-stakes predator.
“Who are you?” Julian asked, his voice dripping with icy contempt.
“I’m her husband!” Arthur gasped from the floor, writhing in Marcus’s grip. “This is a domestic matter! Stay out of it!”

Julian looked down at Arthur, then glanced at the faint, fading yellow bruise near my collarbone that my sweater hadn't quite covered. Julian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin.
“Marcus,” Julian said calmly. “Notify Italian border police that an aggressive trespasser is harassing my family. And call our legal counsel in Milan.”
