Chapter 3 - The Gala of Shadows

By eight o'clock the following evening, the Reed manor in Greenwich was transformed into an opulent ballroom spectacle. Crystal chandeliers threw brilliant light across the high ceilings, classical musicians played near the conservatory, and hundreds of powerful elites—politicians, CEOs, and socialites—milled about in tuxedos and evening gowns, sipping champagne.

Underneath the glamour, however, the atmosphere was suffocating.

I stood near the grand staircase in a modest black dress, keeping a vigilant eye on the crowd while discreetly monitoring the earpiece hidden beneath my hair. Nathaniel’s head of security, Marcus, was stationed in the control room monitoring every camera feed on the property.

Down in the private library, Sophia and Eli were under the care of two trusted guards, playing quietly with building blocks. Sophia was wearing her yellow dress, completely unaware that she held the key to bringing down an empire.

"Elena, do you copy?" Marcus’s voice cracked through my earpiece.

"I copy," I whispered into my collar.

"Julian Vance has arrived. He’s moving toward the main ballroom with two of his private bodyguards."

My heart did a nervous flip. I turned toward the grand archway. Julian Vance walked in, exuding arrogance. He was a tall, sharp-featured man in his late forties, smiling smoothly for the photographers while shaking hands with members of the board. He looked like a man who believed he owned the world.

Nathaniel stepped out from the library corridor to meet him. He wore a tailored dark tuxedo, his expression an impenetrable mask of cool composure.

"Julian," Nathaniel said smoothly, offering a brief hand-shake. "Glad you could make it."

"Wouldn't miss it for the world, brother," Julian replied, his voice laced with patronizing warmth. "The board is anxious to hear your presentation on the Q4 allocations. Though, between us, some of the directors are worried you're still... distracted by Evelyn's memory. Two years is a long time to mourn, Nathaniel. The company needs a leader whose eyes are on the future."

"My eyes have never been clearer, Julian," Nathaniel answered, a subtle spark flashing in his dark eyes. "In fact, tonight's presentation will address Evelyn's legacy directly. I think the board will find it... illuminating."

Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly, a momentary tremor of suspicion passing over his features before his smooth mask returned. "Is that so? Well, we look forward to it."

At 9:00 PM, Nathaniel took his place at the podium at the front of the ballroom. The chatter in the crowd died down as silver chimes rang out through the speakers. The board members gathered at the front row, Julian standing prominently among them with a smug, expectant smile.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Nathaniel began, his powerful voice reverberating through the hall. "Thank you for joining me tonight. For two years, Reed Global has operated under a cloud of loss. When my wife, Evelyn, passed away, we were told it was an unavoidable tragedy of nature. But Evelyn was a woman who believed in absolute truth—and in leaving nothing behind unsaid."

Behind Nathaniel, a massive projection screen lowered from the ceiling.

Julian’s smile faltered. He took a subtle step back, signaling to one of his bodyguards near the wall. "What is he doing?" Julian muttered under his breath.

"Tonight," Nathaniel continued, "I am honoring Evelyn’s final contribution to our company and our family. A piece of art—and an unshakeable truth."

Nathaniel turned toward the side entrance of the ballroom and nodded at me.

My pulse thudded in my ears as I opened the doors. Sophia walked out into the bright light, holding my hand. The crowd gasped softly at the sweet sight of the tiny three-year-old girl in her yellow dress walking across the polished floor toward the small stage where a high-definition motion camera had been hidden inside the floral arrangement.

"Elena, what is this absurd circus?" Julian demanded loudly, stepping forward with an authoritative frown. "Nathaniel, you've lost your mind! Dragging your domestic staff's child onto the stage during a corporate gala? This is an embarrassment to the board!"

"Sit down, Julian," Nathaniel commanded, his voice cold as ice.

Sophia reached the center of the floor. She looked up at Nathaniel, who gave her a gentle, reassuring nod. Then, she looked at me. I blew her a kiss and held up my hands, making the gentle curved shape of a ballerina's arms.

Sophia smiled. The music began to play—the exact same soft piano and string melody that had resonated through the quiet hallway the afternoon before.

Sophia lifted her tiny arms, elbows soft, fingers curved gracefully inward. She began to dance.

The high-definition camera above the stage clicked into active tracking mode, casting an invisible grid of infrared light across Sophia's tiny form. On the massive screen behind Nathaniel, a digital wireframe mesh began to construct itself around her movements, mapping her posture frame by frame.

First turn. The screen registered a green verification light.

Second turn. The mesh synchronized with the encrypted data layer on the thumb drive plugged into the main server.

Julian’s face turned pale. He recognized the sequence. "Stop this! Turn off the music!" he yelled, lunging toward the AV desk.

Marcus stepped out from the shadow of the pillar, blocking Julian’s path with a formidable chest. "Stay where you are, Mr. Vance."

Third turn. Sophia wobbled slightly, her balance tipping as she spun on her bare feet. My heart sank into my throat. Come on, baby, I prayed silently. Remember the game.

Eli's voice suddenly carried across the quiet ballroom from the doorway where his nanny held him: "Feet first, Sophia! Do the big turn!"

Sophia giggled, planted her feet, locked her posture just as Nathaniel had coached her late last night, and executed the final, sweeping double spin, landing gracefully with her arms extended.

Fifth turn complete.

A loud, electronic ping echoed through the sound system. The screen behind Nathaniel flickered, and the wireframe mesh collapsed into a bold, shining text prompt: DECRYPTION SUCCESSFUL. FILE UNLOCKED.
