Chapter 6 - Shadows from the PastThe sunlit peace of Greenwich was short-lived. Two weeks after Nathaniel and I confessed our feelings, a heavy cloud returned to the Reed estate. While Julian Vance was safely behind bars, his vast network of shadow investors and corrupt contacts had not completely dissolved.

It started with small, insidious occurrences. Security cameras at the perimeter of the estate experienced brief, localized blackouts. Mysterious vehicles hovered along the private access roads late at night. Marcus, head of estate security, spent long hours in the command center, his brow furrowed as he analyzed encrypted network pings attempting to breach the manor’s internal firewalls.
One late evening, as Nathaniel and I sat in the library going over foundation funding reports, Marcus knocked firmly and stepped inside.
"Mr. Reed, Elena. We have a situation," Marcus said, his voice clipped and serious. "Someone is probing the estate’s external defenses. It’s not amateur work. They are using high-grade military jamming equipment."
Nathaniel immediately closed his laptop, his jaw tightening. "Julian’s remaining allies?"
"We believe so," Marcus confirmed. "Before his arrest, Julian funneled ten million dollars into a blind trust tied to a former mercenary syndicate known as the Obsidian Group. The terms of the trust are simple: if Julian is convicted, the money is released upon the recovery of a physical secondary ledger that Evelyn hidden away before her death."
My heart skipped a beat. "A secondary ledger? But we unlocked the entire drive with Sophia’s dance!"
Nathaniel stood up, pacing near the fireplace. "The digital drive exposed Julian’s embezzlement and murder charges, but Evelyn’s journal mentioned a physical safety deposit ledger containing the names of high-ranking international officials Julian bribed to facilitate his offshore networks. If that ledger reaches the press or federal prosecutors, dozens of powerful men will go to prison for life."
"And they think the ledger is hidden here," I realized, terror cold and sharp against my ribs. "That’s why they’re watching us."
"They don't just want the ledger, Elena," Nathaniel said, turning to me, his eyes burning with protective fury. "They know Sophia was the key to unlocking the first drive. They believe she knows where the physical ledger is hidden."
Before I could process the horror of his words, the power throughout the entire mansion suddenly cut out.
The glittering crystal chandeliers plunged into pitch-black darkness. The emergency generators kicked in three seconds later, bathing the room in a dim, amber glow. Alarm sirens blared softly through the high ceilings.
"They’ve cut the main power grid lines at the gate!" Marcus drew his sidearm. "Mr. Reed, get Elena and the children into the panic room beneath the east wing. Now!"
May you like
Nathaniel grabbed my hand, his grip tight and unyielding. "I won't let anyone touch our family, Elena. Move!"
We ran through the echoing hallways toward the children's quarters. My heart hammered wildly in my chest. I had fought so hard to give Sophia a safe, peaceful life, and once again, the shadows of the elite world were trying to tear it away. But as I looked at Nathaniel’s resolute face beside me, I knew I wasn't running alone anymore.
