Chapter 9 - The Battle for Greenwich

Static crackled over the intercom line before Nathaniel answered, his tone razor-sharp. "I'm on the second-floor gallery overlooking the ballroom. Marcus and three of our guards are with me. We have the high ground. Stay in the bunker, Elena!"
"Be careful, my love," I whispered into the mic.
On the live feed monitor, I watched the high-stakes drama unfold in eerie silence.
The two mercenary intruders approached the tall, ornate grandfather clock standing against the mahogany wall. One of them raised the butt of his rifle, preparing to shatter the antique glass face.
Suddenly, flashbang grenades rained down from the second-floor balcony above them.
BOOM!
A blinding flash of light and deafening sound erupted on the screen, causing the intruders to stumble back, disoriented. Nathaniel and Marcus opened fire with precision, taking out the primary threats in seconds. The tactical superiority and knowledge of the estate gave Nathaniel’s security team absolute control.
Within five minutes, the estate’s secondary perimeter security forces, along with local police units responding to the automated silent alarm, flooded the grounds. The remaining mercenary infiltrators outside were surrounded and apprehended without further bloodshed.
The red emergency lights in the bunker turned back to a soft, warm white. The heavy blast door hummed and slowly rolled open.
I ran out of the panic room and up the stairs, leaving the children safely with Margaret.
When I burst into the ballroom, the room was filled with officers, emergency responders, and security personnel. Nathaniel was standing near the grand piano, speaking to a federal agent. He looked tired, his dark hair slightly disheveled, but as soon as his eyes caught mine, everything else ceased to exist for him.
He walked toward me with long, eager strides, pulling me fiercely into his arms. I buried my face in his neck, smelling gunpowder and rain, feeling the frantic, powerful thud of his heart against mine.
"You're safe," he breathed into my hair, holding me so tightly I could barely breathe. "You saved us, Elena. Your memory... you found what everyone else missed."
"We found it together," I corrected softly, pulling back to look into his handsome face. "Where is it?"
Nathaniel led me over to the grandfather clock. Its glass door was open, and in Nathaniel’s hand sat a small, black leather-bound ledger, retrieved from the hidden compartment behind the chime gears using the tiny brass key I had handed over to Marcus.
The federal agent stepped forward, bowing his head respectfully. "Mr. Reed, with this ledger, we have the complete paper trail. Every corrupt politician, every offshore bank account, and every person who helped Julian Vance poison your wife will be in custody by sunrise. It is over. Truly over."

Nathaniel looked at the ledger, then at the ballroom where so much pain, mystery, and eventual healing had taken place. He closed his eyes for a long moment, letting out a deep breath he felt like he had been holding for two long years.
"Yes," Nathaniel whispered, looking at me with a soft, radiant smile. "It is finally over."
