Chapter 7 - The Breach

The east wing corridor was dimly lit by emergency floor lights. We burst into the children's nursery to find Margaret, the housekeeper, holding Eli and Sophia close to her. Sophia looked up at me with big, wide eyes, holding her favorite stuffed bear tightly against her chest.

"Mommy? Why are the lights red?" Sophia asked, her voice small but surprisingly brave.

"It's just a game, sweetie," I said, rushing to scoop her into my arms while Nathaniel lifted Eli onto his shoulder. "We're going to take a trip down to the secret fortress."

"With Eli?" Eli asked, rubbing his sleepy eyes.

"Yes, buddy. With Eli," Nathaniel said gently, kissing his son's forehead before turning a fierce, calculating gaze toward the doorway.

Marcus’s voice crackled through Nathaniel’s tactical earpiece. "Mr. Reed! Three armed intruders have breached the glass atrium near the conservatory! They are heavily equipped and moving fast. We are engaging them in the main gallery, but they’ve deployed signal dampeners!"

"Get the estate lockdown gates down!" Nathaniel commanded into the mic. "Contain them in the north quadrant!"

We hurried down the reinforced spiral staircase leading to the sub-basement where the reinforced steel panic room was located. The heavy blast door hummed as Nathaniel entered a twelve-digit passcode and scanned his retina. The heavy door unlatched with a loud pneumatic hiss.

"Margaret, take Eli and Sophia inside," Nathaniel ordered.

"Nathaniel, you're coming in too, right?" I asked, pulling at his sleeve, dread pooling in my stomach.

He turned to me, placing his hands on my shoulders, his gray eyes shining with fierce love. "Elena, the panic room controls can be overridden from the master security console in my study if they breach the sub-basement network. I have to go with Marcus to ensure the federal authorities are alerted and the estate lockdown holds. I need you to stay inside with the children."

"No! It's too dangerous!" I cried softly. "They are mercenary professionals!"

"And this is my home," Nathaniel said, his voice steady, carrying an unbreakable strength. "I spent two years being passive while my wife was murdered in secret. I will not hide in the dark while monsters threaten the woman I love and my children. Trust me, Elena."

He pulled me into a deep, desperate kiss that tasted of rain, fire, and absolute devotion.

"I love you," he whispered against my lips. "Lock the door behind me."

Before I could protest further, he gently pushed me inside the panic room, stepped back, and hit the manual closure button from the outside. The heavy steel door slid shut with a definitive, heavy thud, sealing us inside the high-tech sanctuary.

Through the reinforced glass viewing port, I watched Nathaniel draw a sleek handgun from a hidden wall compartment, check the chamber with practiced precision, and disappear up the stairs into the shadows.
