Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The rain had replaced the snow by the second night of Vincent’s absence, melting the pristine white blanket of the estate into a soggy, bleak expanse of gray and green. Thunder rumbled low across the horizon, sending heavy sheets of water driving against the glass windows of the staff cottage.

Inside, Claire was folding clean laundry at the small kitchen table. Maddie was already asleep in her bedroom, her little breathing soft and steady. Ranger lay stretched out across the rug in front of the cold fireplace, his tail occasionally twitching as he dreamed.

Claire picked up a small cotton shirt of Maddie’s, her mind drifting to Vincent.

It had been forty-eight hours since he left. Two days of agonizing silence. Daniel and the rest of the security force maintained their rigorous patrols, walking the perimeter with heavy flashlights and silenced sidearms, but the manor felt hollow without Vincent’s presence. She missed the low rumble of his voice, the heavy sound of his boots on the floorboards above, the silent way he would watch her from across the room.

Suddenly, Ranger lifted his head. His ears swiveled sharply toward the back kitchen door.

Claire froze, a pair of socks dropping from her hands. "Ranger?"

The dog didn't bark, but a low, dangerous vibration began deep in his chest. His muscular body went rigid as he pushed himself up from the rug, his hackles rising along his spine.

Claire stood up slowly, her heart hammering against her ribs. She moved silently toward the kitchen window, pulling back the corner of the curtain.

The rain was pouring heavily, obscuring the view of the orchard. But through the blurred glass, she saw something that made her blood run cold.

The floodlights along the eastern fence were dark.

That section of the perimeter was supposed to be illuminated twenty-four hours a day. And standing near the woodline, illuminated only by the brief flashes of lightning, were three dark figures cutting through the heavy steel chain-link fence with industrial tools.

"Oh, God," Claire whispered, pulling her hand back from the curtain.

They weren't security guards. They wore rain slickers, tactical vests, and were carrying short-barreled automatic rifles.

The past she had run from—the lethal shadows that had claimed her husband—had finally tracked her down. Or worse, Vincent’s enemies had taken advantage of his absence to strike at his home.

Claire ran into Maddie’s room, her hands shaking violently. She pulled the sleeping child from beneath the covers, wrapping her tightly in a heavy woolen blanket.

"Mommy?" Maddie mumbled, bleary-eyed and confused. "Is it morning?"

"Shh, baby. Quiet. We have to play a game, okay? The super quiet game," Claire whispered, her voice trembling as she carried Maddie out into the hallway.

Ranger was already standing by the back door, his lip curled back over his teeth, revealing long, white fangs. A silent, terrifying predator ready for war.

Before Claire could reach the front door to escape toward the main manor, the glass in the kitchen door shattered inward with a violent crash.

A heavy boot kicked the remaining wood out of the frame, and a tall, masked man stepped into the kitchen, a wet rifle leveled directly at Claire’s chest.

"Don't move, sweetheart," the man rasped through a dark balaclava. His voice carried a heavy Chicago accent. "Dominic sends his regards to Calloway."

Claire backed away, pulling Maddie tightly against her chest, putting her own body between the gunman and her daughter. "Please! Take whatever you want! She's just a child!"

"We aren't here for money," a second man said, stepping through the broken door behind the first. "We're here to leave a message for Vincent that he won't ever forget. Kill the dog first."

The first man raised his rifle, aiming it at Ranger.

He made a fatal mistake. He looked at the dog's eyes instead of his hands.

Ranger didn't hesitate. With a roar of pure rage that shook the small room, the 150-pound mastiff launched himself through the air.

He struck the first gunman with the force of a speeding vehicle. The man let out a wet scream as Ranger’s massive jaws clamped down on his forearm, crushing bone and tissue instantly. The rifle flew from his grip, hitting the linoleum floor with a heavy metallic clatter.

"Shoot him! Shoot him!" the second man screamed, raising his weapon.

"Ranger, NO!" Claire shrieked.

Claire didn't think. She dropped to her knees, shoving Maddie under the sturdy oak dining table, reached out, and grabbed the fallen rifle from the floor. Her late husband had taught her how to handle a firearm years ago during their brief period on the run.

She disengaged the safety with a sharp click, aimed at the second man's chest, and pulled the trigger.

The gunshot echoed like thunder inside the tiny cottage.

The second gunman gasped, his weapon dropping as he stumbled backward out the broken door, collapsing onto the muddy porch.

Ranger was still tearing into the first man on the floor, his brutal, predatory instincts fully unleashed. The man was screaming, hitting the dog with his free fist, but Ranger felt no pain—he was defending his pack.

"Claire!" a loud voice thundered from the front porch.

The front door was kicked off its hinges, crashing onto the rug.

Vincent Calloway charged into the room, flanked by Daniel and four heavily armed security guards. Vincent’s face was a mask of absolute, murderous fury. He held a black hand-cannon in his right hand.

He swept the room in a fraction of a second: the shattered glass, the wounded intruder on the floor under Ranger, Claire on her knees holding a rifle, and Maddie trembling under the table.

Vincent didn't ask questions. He walked straight up to the man pinned under Ranger, grabbed him by the throat with one hand, and slammed him against the wall. He ripped off the man's mask, revealing a bruised, terrified face dripping with blood.

"Who sent you?" Vincent roared, his voice sounding like a demon from the depths of hell.

"Moretti..." the man choked out, blood leaking from his mouth. "Dominic... said... the estate was wide open..."

Vincent’s eyes burned with a cold, terrifying fire. He didn't execute the man. He shoved him hard into Daniel’s arms.

"Take him to the basement," Vincent ordered coldly. "Ensure Dr. Brooks keeps him alive until I am done questioning him."

"Yes, boss," Daniel grunted, dragging the bleeding intruder out into the rain along with the second wounded guard from the porch.

The room fell into a sudden, eerie silence, save for the heavy breathing of Ranger and the patter of rain outside.

Vincent lowered his gun, sliding it into his shoulder holster. He turned to Claire.

Claire was still on the floor, sitting on her knees, the rifle resting in her lap. She was hyperventilating, her body shaking so violently that her teeth were chattering. The adrenaline that had propelled her to shoot was rapidly draining away, leaving behind raw, paralyzing terror.

Vincent dropped to his knees in front of her. He didn't touch the gun. He reached out with both hands, gently taking the heavy rifle from her slick fingers and sliding it across the floor away from them.

"Claire," Vincent said, his voice dropping from a terrifying roar to a soft, agonizing tender whisper. "Claire, look at me."

Claire lifted her head slowly. Tears were streaming down her face, washing away the dirt and powder residue on her cheeks.

"Are you hit? Are you hurt?" Vincent asked, his fingers gently framing her jaw, his dark eyes searching every inch of her face for blood.

"M-Maddie..." Claire sobbed out, unable to form a complete sentence. "Maddie... under..."

Vincent immediately reached under the oak table, gently sliding the small, blanket-wrapped bundle into his arms. Maddie was crying softly, her eyes wide with terror, but she was completely unhurt.

Vincent pulled both of them—mother and child—into his massive chest, wrapping his heavy arms around them like an iron shield.

"I have you," Vincent whispered into Claire’s hair, his own chest heaving with an emotion he had never permitted himself to feel before: pure, unadulterated terror at the thought of losing them. "I have you. You're safe. I'm sorry... I'm so sorry I wasn't here."

Claire buried her face in Vincent’s shoulder, smelling the rain, the leather of his jacket, and his clean scent. She grabbed his shirt with both hands, clinging to him as if he were the only solid anchor in a shattering world.

Beside them, Ranger sat down heavy on his haunches. He lowered his big black head, resting his snout on Vincent’s knee, letting out a long, exhausted sigh.

The fortress had been breached. The war had arrived at their doorstep. But as Vincent held Claire and Maddie in the middle of the ruined cottage, he knew with absolute, uncompromising certainty:

He would burn the entire city of Chicago to ash before he let anyone harm them again.
