Chapter 7 - Healing Scars

Spring came early to Illinois that year.

By April, the thick ice that had frozen the estate’s pond had melted into sparkling, clear water. Pink cherry blossoms bloomed along the long driveway, casting a sweet scent into the warm spring breeze.

The staff cottage had been completely repaired and restored, but it remained empty. Claire and Maddie had officially moved into the main manor’s east wing.

The transformation of the Calloway estate was staggering. The dark, imposing atmosphere that had hung over the property for decades had dissolved into laughter, warmth, and light. Armed guards still patrolled the gates, but their posture was relaxed, their dark tactical suits replaced by professional attire. The house was no longer a fortress hiding secrets; it was a home filled with life.

In the sun-drenched breakfast nook overlooking the gardens, Claire was setting down a plate of fresh blueberry pancakes. Maddie was sitting in a high chair, happily kicking her feet while trying to feed a small piece of pancake to Ranger.

The mastiff sat patiently beside her chair, his massive tongue carefully taking the small piece of food from her tiny fingers with incredible delicacy.

"No feeding the dog from the table, Maddie," Claire scolded gently, though a bright smile lit up her face.

"He likes blueberries, Mommy!" Maddie protested, giggling.

Vincent walked into the room, wearing a sharp blue dress shirt with no tie, his jacket slung over one arm. The heavy, dark shadows beneath his eyes that had defined him for years were completely gone. He looked younger, happier, and profoundly at peace.

He walked up behind Claire, sliding his arms around her waist and leaning down to press a soft kiss against the side of her neck.

Claire leaned back into his solid chest, sighing happily as her hands covered his. "Good morning, handsome."

"Good morning," Vincent whispered, his lips lingering against her warm skin. He looked over at Maddie. "Good morning, little troublemaker."

"Morning, Vincent!" Maddie cheered, holding up a pancake. "Look! It's round!"

Vincent chuckled, stepping over to ruffle her golden hair before leaning down to pat Ranger’s broad head. "Good boy, Ranger."

The dog gave a low, contented hum, leaning his heavy shoulder against Vincent’s leg.

Julian Vance stepped into the nook, carrying a thin leather briefcase. He looked relaxed, a rare smile on his sharp face.

"Good morning, everyone," Julian said. "Vincent, I have the final papers from the Department of Justice."

Claire’s breath hitched slightly, looking up.

Julian pulled out a document stamped with a golden seal and laid it on the table. "Dominic Moretti pled guilty yesterday to twenty-four counts of federal racketeering, conspiracy, and extortion. He was sentenced to life without parole in a maximum-security federal prison in Colorado."

Claire let out a long, shuddering breath, a weight that she had carried for three long years finally evaporating into nothingness.

"And," Julian continued, handing a second document to Claire. "The Calloway Logistics restructuring is complete. The entire shipping network has been converted into a fully legitimate, publicly audited corporation. All assets are clean, legal, and protected."

Claire looked at Vincent, her brown eyes shining with pride and love. "You did it."

"We did it," Vincent corrected softly, taking her hand and bringing it to his lips. "I spent thirty-eight years building a wall around myself, Claire. You and Maddie were the only ones brave enough to walk through it."

Later that afternoon, Vincent took Maddie out into the meadow behind the stables.

Ranger ran through the tall green grass, his leg completely healed, chasing a bright red ball that Maddie kept throwing with all her tiny strength.

Vincent sat on a wooden bench near the edge of the field, watching them. Claire walked up, carrying two glasses of fresh lemonade, and sat beside him, resting her head on his broad shoulder.

"She loves it here," Claire said softly, watching Maddie roll in the grass with the giant dog.

"She belongs here," Vincent replied, wrapping his arm around Claire’s shoulders, pulling her close. "Both of you do."

They sat in comfortable silence for a long moment, watching the golden afternoon sunlight filter through the trees.

"Vincent?" Claire asked quietly.

"Yes, my love?"

"Did you ever think... eleven years ago, when you found Ranger bleeding in that ditch... that he would be the reason we found each other?"

Vincent looked at the giant black dog, who was currently letting Maddie drape a daisy chain over his broad velvet ears.

May you like

Vincent smiled—a warm, radiant smile that reached all the way to his dark eyes.

"Ranger was waiting for someone with a soft enough heart to save him," Vincent whispered, turning to look into Claire’s eyes. "It just took him eleven years to find her."
