Chapter 8 - Promises in the Sun

Summer brought long, golden days to the Calloway estate. The rolling hills of the estate grounds were lush and vibrant, and the big black mastiff had acquired a new role: full-time guardian and companion to the most important two people in Vincent Calloway’s life.

It was an early Saturday morning in July. The estate was peaceful, save for the chirping of birds in the orchard.

Claire stood on the wrap-around veranda of the main manor, holding a steaming mug of tea. She watched Vincent in the yard below. He was wearing a simple grey t-shirt and jeans—a sight she had rarely seen months ago—helping Maddie plant small red tomato seedlings into a newly built garden bed.

Ranger lay nearby in the cool shade of an oak tree, his heavy tail thumping lazily against the soil whenever Maddie laughed.

"Press the dirt down gently, like this," Vincent was demonstrating, his massive, scarred hands tenderly guiding Maddie’s tiny fingers into the dark soil.

"Like a baby blanket?" Maddie asked, looking up with wide, serious eyes.

"Exactly like a baby blanket," Vincent agreed, his voice filled with a tenderness that still brought tears to Claire’s eyes whenever she witnessed it.

Claire walked down the wooden steps, her light summer dress swishing around her knees. She set her mug on a nearby garden table and walked up behind Vincent, wrapping her arms around his neck from behind.

Vincent leaned back into her touch, tilting his head up so she could kiss his cheek.

"You're a natural gardener, Mr. Calloway," Claire teased softly.

"I have a good teacher," Vincent replied, catching her hand and kissing her inner wrist.

Maddie wiped her muddy hands on her overalls and looked at both of them, her small face lighting up with a mischievous grin. "Vincent! Kiss Mommy on the mouth!"

Claire’s face flushed bright pink, while Vincent burst into a deep, booming laugh that echoed across the quiet garden.

"Is that an order, little boss?" Vincent asked Maddie, his dark eyes sparkling with joy.

"Yes! A big kiss!" Maddie giggled, clapping her hands.

Vincent stood up, dusting the soil off his knees. He turned to Claire, grabbing her waist and pulling her flush against his body. Before Claire could utter a breathy laugh, Vincent leaned down and captured her lips in a deep, passionate, unhurried kiss that left her breathless.

When he finally pulled back, Claire was leaning against his chest, her heart fluttering like a young girl’s.

"Consider the order executed," Vincent murmured against her ear.

That evening, after Maddie had been tucked into bed—with Ranger taking up his usual post on the soft rug beside her frame—Vincent asked Claire to walk with him down to the glass sunroom at the end of the terrace.

The room was lit by dozens of soft, warm candles. A bottle of fine champagne sat in an ice bucket on a small iron table, surrounded by vases of fresh white roses.

Claire stopped at the threshold, her hands clutching her heart. "Vincent... what is all this?"

Vincent took her hand, leading her into the warm, scented room. His face was unusually nervous—a look Claire had never seen on the formidable man.

"Claire," Vincent began, his voice deep and slightly unsteady. "Six months ago, I was a man living in a dark, empty castle. I thought power was the only thing that mattered. I thought survival was the only goal."

He took both of her hands in his, looking straight into her brown eyes with an intensity that made the rest of the world fade away.

"Then a little girl walked into the snow with a washcloth," Vincent continued, a gentle smile touching his lips. "And behind her was the bravest, most beautiful woman I have ever known. You brought light into my house, Claire. You gave me a reason to hope, a reason to heal, and a family to love."

Vincent slowly dropped down onto one knee on the cool marble floor.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He flipped it open, revealing a breathtaking ring featuring a flawless oval-cut diamond set in polished platinum.

"Claire Parker," Vincent said, his dark eyes shining with emotion. "Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you let me spend the rest of my life protecting you, loving you, and being a father to Maddie?"

Claire covered her mouth with both hands, tears of overwhelming joy spilling over her eyelashes. She didn't hesitate for even a fraction of a second.

"Yes!" Claire sobbed happily, dropping to her knees in front of him, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Vincent! A thousand times yes!"

Vincent let out a long breath of pure relief and happiness, pulling her tight into his arms, slipping the diamond ring onto her finger before capturing her lips in a kiss that promised forever.

Outside the sunroom window, sitting quietly in the moonlight, Ranger watched them through the glass. The massive mastiff let out a low, happy huff, rested his broad head on his paws, and went to sleep, knowing his family was finally whole.
