Chapter 4 - The Fortress Within

By midnight, the staff cottage was completely sealed off by crime scene tape and private security guards. Claire and Maddie were moved directly into the main manor—specifically, into the master wing on the third floor, an area of the house that had been strictly off-limits to everyone except Vincent for over a decade.
The room was vast and warm, featuring a king-sized bed, a stone fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the misty grounds. Heavy velvet curtains were pulled shut, keeping out the rain and the dark.
Maddie had finally fallen asleep in the center of the giant bed, exhausted from the terror of the night. Ranger lay on the rug directly at the foot of the mattress, his head resting on his paws, his ears constantly twitching at every sound in the hallway. He refused to leave the room.
Claire sat in a plush armchair near the fire, wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket that Vincent had given her. She had showered, washing away the smell of gunpowder and blood, but she still felt cold inside.
The heavy double doors of the bedroom opened, and Vincent walked in. He had changed into a dark sweater and trousers. His hair was damp from the rain, and his expression was grave.
He walked over to the armchair, standing beside her. "Dr. Brooks checked Maddie while she was resting. No physical harm. She's just frightened."
"And the men?" Claire asked quietly, her voice hoarse. "The men who came into my home?"
Vincent’s jaw tightened. "They will never bother you again. Dominic Moretti thought he could strike at me where he believed I was vulnerable. He believed taking my staff hostage would give him leverage over my shipping routes."
Claire looked up, her brown eyes meeting his. "Julian told me... well, I know who Dominic Moretti is, Vincent."
Vincent froze slightly, his dark eyes sharpening. "What do you know?"
Claire took a shaky breath, pulling the cashmere blanket tighter around her shoulders. "My husband... Thomas. He didn't die in an accident. He was murdered by Moretti’s men in Cleveland three years ago. Thomas found out they were using his accounting firm to launder blood money. When he tried to go to the authorities, they blew up his car."
She looked away, staring into the dancing flames of the fireplace.
"I ran," Claire whispered, tears brimming in her eyes. "I took Maddie, dropped my real name, and spent two years moving from town to town, living in cheap motels, scared of every shadow. I came to this estate six months ago because I thought... I thought a high-security private property was the safest place on earth for my daughter. I didn't know you were connected to that world, Vincent. I didn't know."
Vincent listened in absolute silence. Every word she spoke cut through him like a dull blade. The guilt that weighed on his chest was almost unbearable. She had fled the wolf only to build her nest in the lion's den.
Slowly, deliberately, Vincent sank to his knees beside her chair, just as he had in the cottage hours earlier. He reached out, covering her small, trembling hands with his broad, warm palms.
"I am not Dominic Moretti, Claire," Vincent said, his voice deep, gravelly, and ringing with absolute sincerity. "Yes, my family built its wealth in the shadows of this city. Yes, I command men who are capable of terrible violence. But I have rules. I do not hurt innocents. I do not target families. And I do not allow monsters like Moretti to exist in my city."
Claire looked at their joined hands. His skin was rough, calloused, marked by old scars, yet his touch was lighter than a feather.
"He targeted you because of me, didn't he?" Claire asked softly. "He realized I was hiding here."
"No," Vincent corrected firmly. "Moretti didn't know who you were. He hit my house to test my security because he heard I was pulling back from the street business. He thought I had grown soft."
Vincent lifted his head, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a ferocity that took her breath away.
"He made the worst mistake of his life. He brought war to my home. He put you and Maddie in danger. And for that... I am going to tear his empire down to the foundation."
Claire felt a surge of conflicting emotions—fear of the violence to come, but beneath it, an overwhelming, powerful sense of safety. For three years, she had carried the terrifying weight of protection all by herself. She had been the only shield between her daughter and a cruel world.
Now, standing before her, was a man who possessed the strength, the power, and the unyielding will to shield them both.
"Vincent," Claire whispered, her voice trembling. "Don't... don't get killed. Please."
Vincent’s heart slammed against his ribs. He stood up slowly, bringing her up with him. Her blanket slipped slightly, revealing her delicate shoulders. Vincent reached out, his long fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His thumb lingered on her cheekbone, wiping away a dry tear track.
"I have survived twenty years in this city, Claire," Vincent murmured, his voice dropping low, rich with an emotion he could no longer hide. "I had nothing to live for except control and survival. But now..."
He leaned in closer, his dark eyes searching hers, giving her every opportunity to pull away. Claire didn't move. She leaned into his touch, her breath catching as his face hovered inches from hers.
"Now I have a reason to make sure I come back every single night," Vincent whispered.
He pressed his lips to her forehead—a slow, tender, protective kiss that lingered for several seconds. When he pulled back, his eyes were burning with an absolute, unbreakable pledge.
"You and Maddie will stay here, in the main house," Vincent commanded gently. "My personal guards will be posted at every entrance. Tomorrow morning, I go into the city to end this."
Claire nodded slowly, her heart pounding with a sweet, aching intensity. "We'll be waiting for you."
Vincent looked at her for one long moment, turned to Ranger, and gave a crisp nod. "Watch them."
May you like
Ranger let out a quiet huff, settling his massive head back onto his paws.
As Vincent turned and walked out of the bedroom, his heavy coat swishing against his boots, Claire touched her forehead where his lips had rested. The terror of the night was still real, but deep inside her chest, a new flame had been lit—a flame that no storm could ever extinguish.
