Chapter 9 - The Wedding at the Manor

The morning of the wedding was blessed with clear blue skies and a soft autumn breeze that carried the golden leaves of the maple trees across the estate lawn.
The Calloway manor had been transformed into a fairy-tale garden. White silk ribbons wrapped around the iron archways, thousands of white roses lined the grassy aisle, and a string quartet played soft classical melodies near the flower-draped altar set up by the lake.
In the master suite, Claire stood before a full-length mirror, taking a deep breath.
She wore a breathtaking A-line wedding gown of ivory lace, with long, delicate sleeves and a sweeping train. Her golden-brown hair was styled in an elegant updo, woven with tiny white flowers. She looked radiant, peaceful, and stunningly beautiful.
Standing beside her was Agent Sarah Chen—who had become a close friend over the past months—and Julian Vance, who was beaming like a proud uncle.
A soft knock came at the door, and little Maddie stepped in.
Maddie, now nearly four years old, wore a matching miniature ivory dress with a sash of pale pink. She held a basket filled with red rose petals.
"Mommy!" Maddie gasped, her eyes wide. "You look like a princess!"
Claire knelt down, carefully avoiding her dress, and pulled Maddie into a gentle hug. "And you look like the prettiest flower girl in the entire world, sweetheart."
"Is Ranger coming?" Maddie asked, looking around.
"Of course he is," Julian laughed, stepping forward. "He's currently undergoing his final grooming session. Daniel had to put a silk bowtie on him."
Ten minutes later, the music shifted to the traditional processional walk.
The guests—a select group of trusted friends, business associates who had supported Vincent’s transition into legitimate commerce, and the loyal estate staff—stood up along the lawn.
At the end of the altar, standing beside the minister, was Vincent Calloway.
He wore a tailored black tuxedo that made him look impossibly handsome and commanding. His eyes were fixed entirely on the far end of the aisle, waiting for the only vision that mattered to him.
Standing beside Vincent as his best man was Ranger. The massive black mastiff stood proud and tall, wearing a custom black silk collar fitted with a neat white bowtie. He was calm, majestic, and completely at ease among the crowd.
The music reached its crescendo.
Claire stepped onto the green runner, holding a bouquet of white roses and wild orchids. Maddie walked ahead of her, happily tossing pink petals onto the grass.
When Vincent saw Claire walking toward him, his breath hitched in his chest. A single tear slipped down the cheek of the formidable Chicago leader—a tear of pure, unadulterated gratitude.
As Claire reached the altar, Vincent stepped forward, taking her hand gently from Julian, who had escorted her down the aisle.
"You are breathtaking," Vincent whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
"You look quite handsome yourself, Mr. Calloway," Claire whispered back, her heart swelling with love.
The minister began the ceremony, his words echoing across the silent, sunlit lake.
"We are gathered here today to unite Vincent and Claire in holy matrimony... a union born not just of love between two souls, but of the healing of an entire family."
When it came time for the exchange of vows, Vincent took Claire’s right hand, sliding the wedding band beside her engagement ring.
"Claire," Vincent said, his voice deep, clear, and steady. "I promise to honor you, to respect you, and to defend your peace with everything I am. I promise to love Maddie as my own daughter, to teach her, and to keep her safe. You gave me a home when I only had a fortress. You are my heart, my refuge, and my wife."
Claire wiped a tear from her cheek, looking into his dark, loving eyes.
"Vincent," Claire said softly. "I promise to love you unconditionally, to stand beside you through every storm, and to build a life filled with joy and faith. You healed the broken pieces of my world and gave us a future where we no longer have to run. You are my protector, my best friend, and my husband."
"The rings, please," the minister said.
Maddie stepped forward, holding out a velvet cushion. Ranger gently nudged Maddie’s side with his nose, encouraging her.
The rings were exchanged.
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the minister declared, beaming. "Vincent, you may kiss your bride."
Vincent didn't wait. He wrapped his arms around Claire, lifting her slightly off her feet, and kissed her with a passion and devotion that drew loud applause and cheers from every guest present.
Ranger let out a loud, triumphant bark, causing everyone to burst into laughter.

Vincent set Claire down, laughing as he picked up Maddie in his arm, holding Claire’s hand with the other.
They turned to face their guests—not as isolated souls fleeing dark pasts, but as a united, invincible family, bathed in the golden sunlight of a new beginning.
