Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Hole

While Hannah rested comfortably at home under the constant care of a private nurse hired by Daniel, Margaret Carter and Vanessa were staying in a cheap motel near the interstate.

Having been evicted from Daniel’s house, their bank accounts frozen by Sterling’s emergency civil injunction, the two women were growing increasingly desperate.

Inside Room 114, the air was thick with the smell of stale cigarettes and cheap coffee. Margaret paced back and forth across the stained carpet like a caged animal, while Vanessa sat on the edge of the unmade bed, frantically refreshing her banking app.

"It still says frozen!" Vanessa yelled, throwing her phone onto the mattress. "Margaret, every single account is locked! My credit cards were declined at the gas station!"

"Shut up and let me think!" Margaret snapped, her face twisted in rage. "Daniel wouldn't do this on his own. That arrogant little bitch Hannah is pulling his strings! She’s filling his head with lies!"

"She's not lying, Mom!" Vanessa shrieked, panic finally stripping away her smug demeanor. "Daniel found the phone! He saw Marcus’s text messages! If Marcus doesn't get that signed house affidavit by midnight tonight, those New York lenders are coming after us! Do you know what those people do to people who default on two million dollars?"

Before Margaret could answer, the motel room door swung open.

Marcus Vance stepped inside, locking the door behind him. He looked disheveled—his expensive Italian suit wrinkled, his tie loosened, sweat glistening on his forehead.

"We have a massive problem," Marcus said, his voice tense and low.

"Did you get the signature?" Margaret demanded, stepping toward him. "Did you find a notary who will authorize the proxy form?"

"Forget the proxy form, you idiot!" Marcus spat. "The State Police just executed a search warrant at my main office in downtown Oakridge. They seized my servers, my ledger books, and my private hard drives!"

Vanessa gasped, covering her mouth. "How? How did they get a warrant so fast?"

"Daniel," Marcus hissed. "He used his compliance connections to hand the state attorney general a complete digital clone of your phone, Vanessa. They know about the shell accounts. They know about the forged quitclaim deed. And worse—Evelyn Reed just filed an emergency motion to exonerate Caleb!"

Margaret’s face turned gray. "Caleb? Caleb is talking?"

"Caleb is testifying against us, Margaret!" Marcus yelled, grabbing her by the shoulders and shaking her violently. "Your son is giving them the entire operational history of Apex Horizon! We are facing federal racketeering charges!"

"Get your hands off me!" Margaret screamed, shoving Marcus backward. "I built that company! I gave you three hundred thousand dollars of my husband's insurance money!"

"And you spent it on luxury cars, designer clothes for Vanessa, and private prenatal clinics!" Marcus retaliated, his eyes wild with rage. "Listen to me! The private syndicate lenders don't care about federal warrants. They want their money or their real estate collateral by midnight. If we don't give them the title to Daniel’s house, they are going to liquidate us!"

Vanessa began sobbing hysterically. "What are we going to do? What are we going to do?"

Marcus pulled a heavy manila folder from his leather briefcase and slammed it onto the small laminate table.

"Daniel’s house is worth one point eight million dollars," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a sinister whisper. "The quitclaim deed is already drafted. It just needs one thing."

"Hannah’s physical signature," Margaret said, her eyes darkening with dangerous intent.

"Or," Marcus said, pulling a slender electronic recording device and a set of forged documents from his coat, "a signed authorization witnessed under distress. We go to the house tonight. Daniel is at the hospital with her. The house is empty—or she's there alone with a nurse."

Margaret looked at Marcus, her fear turning into a cold, psychotic resolve. "If she signs the document, we get the collateral, Marcus clears the syndicate loan, and we take the midnight flight to Mexico."

"And if she refuses?" Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling.

Margaret looked at her daughter-in-law with an expression so devoid of humanity it chilled the room.

"She won't refuse," Margaret said softly. "Not when she realizes what else she stands to lose."
