Chapter 7 - The Master’s Sanctuary

Three months passed.

The dark shadow of Margaret’s conspiracy retreated, replaced by the bright, warm sunshine of late spring in Oakridge.

The house in Oakridge had been transformed. The guest room where Margaret and Vanessa had stayed was completely gutted and renovated into a sunlit, exquisite nursery. The walls were painted a soft sage green, decorated with hand-painted murals of forest animals and cherry blossoms.

A sturdy white crib stood near the window, alongside a plush rocking chair where Hannah sat, resting comfortably at eight months pregnant. Her health had completely stabilized; the hematoma was entirely dissolved, and her blood pressure was perfect.

Downstairs in the kitchen, the air was filled with the mouth-watering scent of fresh homemade lasagna, garlic bread, and roasting vegetables.

Daniel stood at the island counter wearing a chef's apron, carefully layering mozzarella cheese over fresh pasta sheets. Beside him, Caleb was chopping basil with practiced skill.

Caleb had moved into a small apartment three blocks away and was now working as an junior auditor for Robert Sterling’s financial compliance firm, using his real estate knowledge to help catch corporate fraudsters.

"Layer it thicker, Caleb," Daniel joked, nudging his brother. "Hannah said she wanted extra cheese today."

"If I put any more cheese on this, Daniel, it’s going to be a three-story dairy building," Caleb laughed, tossing the chopped basil into the bowl.

The front doorbell chimed.

Daniel wiped his hands on a towel and walked to the entryway. When he opened the door, Dr. Vance stood on the porch holding a decorative gift basket filled with organic prenatal teas, baby blankets, and plush toys.

"Dr. Vance!" Daniel said with a warm, genuine smile. "Come in, please!"

"I was just dropping off these gifts from the hospital staff, Daniel," Dr. Vance smiled, stepping into the foyer. "How is my favorite patient doing?"

"See for yourself," Hannah’s voice called out from the top of the stairs.

She walked down the staircase slowly, holding the railing, wearing a comfortable yellow sundress that highlighted her full, beautiful bump. She looked radiant, her cheeks rosy, her eyes bright and filled with peace.

Dr. Vance looked at her with professional pride and warm affection. "Hannah, you look extraordinary. The bed rest worked wonders."

"It was more than bed rest, Dr. Vance," Hannah smiled, giving the physician a gentle hug. "It was getting rid of the poison."

They all gathered around the dining table—the very table where Margaret had scattered pecans three months earlier. But there was no lingering darkness here now. The table was dressed in white linen, covered in delicious food, filled with warm light and effortless laughter.

As they ate, Caleb raised his water glass for a toast.

"To Hannah and Daniel," Caleb said, his voice filled with deep sincerity. "Who taught me what real family actually means. And to my niece, who is going to be born into the safest, most loving home in the world."

"To family," they all cheered, clinking their glasses together.
