Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Oakridge

At 8:30 PM, rain poured over the suburban neighborhood of Oakridge. The streets were quiet, illuminated only by the warm glow of streetlamps reflecting off wet asphalt.

A non-descript black sedan pulled up across from Daniel and Hannah’s house. The lights inside the two-story home were dim, with only a single lamp burning in the upstairs master bedroom.

Marcus Vance sat in the driver's seat, checking his watch. "8:35 PM. Daniel’s car isn't in the driveway. He’s still at the hospital."

Margaret sat in the passenger seat, holding a heavy umbrella and her purse. In her coat pocket rested a copy of the property transfer documents. Vanessa sat in the back, trembling, her eyes darting nervously around the quiet street.

"Are you sure the nurse leaves at eight?" Margaret asked.

"I called the agency pretending to be Daniel’s assistant," Marcus smiled coldly. "The night shift nurse was canceled. Hannah is in that house completely alone."

"Let's make this quick," Margaret said, opening her car door.

The three of them crept up the concrete walkway, shielding themselves under umbrellas. Marcus reached into his pocket, pulling out a lock-picking set he had acquired hours earlier. Within thirty seconds, the front door lock clicked open softly.

They stepped inside the dark foyer.

The house smelled faintly of cinnamon and lavender—the same peaceful scent Margaret had tried so hard to destroy thirty-six hours earlier.

"Check downstairs," Marcus whispered to Vanessa. "Margaret, come upstairs with me."

They tiptoed up the carpeted staircase, their footsteps muffled by the thick runners. The door to the master bedroom was slightly ajar, warm light spilling out onto the hallway floor.

Marcus pushed the door open completely.

Sitting in an armchair near the window, wrapped in a plush robe with a blanket over her lap, was Hannah. She was sipping a glass of warm milk, a book open on her knees.

When she looked up and saw Margaret and Marcus standing in the doorway, she didn't scream. She didn't flinch. She simply set her cup down on the side table with incredible calm.

"You took longer than I expected, Margaret," Hannah said softly.

Margaret froze, her brow furrowing in suspicion. "You knew we were coming?"

Marcus stepped forward, pulling a pen and the manila folder from his jacket. "It doesn't matter what she knew. Hannah, you're going to sign these transfer forms right now. If you sign them, we leave, and you never see us again."

Hannah looked at Marcus, then turned her gaze toward her mother-in-law. "And if I don't?"

Margaret took three deliberate steps toward the armchair, leaning down until her face was inches from Hannah’s.

"If you don't," Margaret hissed, her voice laced with venom, "I will ensure that the rest of your pregnancy is spent in such absolute terror that you won't last another week. You stole my son. You turned Caleb against me. You ruined my family. Sign the paper, Hannah."

Hannah looked Margaret straight in the eye. "No."

Margaret raised her hand, her palm flat, preparing to strike Hannah across the face just as she had done two days ago.

"Touch her again, Mother," a deep, booming voice echoed from the dark corner of the room, "and you won't walk out of this house."

Margaret gasped, spinning around.

Stepping out from behind the heavy walk-in closet doors was Daniel. In his hand, he held a sleek black tablet screen that was actively recording in high-definition 4K, streaming directly to a secure law enforcement cloud server.

"Daniel?" Margaret stammered, backing away in utter shock. "What... what are you doing here?"

"I live here, Margaret," Daniel said, his voice colder than ice. "This is my home. My wife’s home."

Before Marcus could reach for the door, heavy footsteps thundered up the staircase.

Three plainclothes officers from the State Attorney General’s Executive Protection Unit burst into the bedroom, their weapons drawn and badges flashing.

"State Police! Nobody move! Put your hands on your heads!" the lead officer shouted.

Downstairs, a loud metallic thud echoed as another team of officers handcuffed Vanessa in the kitchen.

Marcus dropped the manila folder, his hands flying into the air. "I was forced into this! Margaret made me do it! She planned everything!"

"Shut your mouth, Marcus!" Margaret screamed, her voice cracking into a shrill, desperate shriek.

An officer stepped forward, pulling Margaret’s arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

"Margaret Carter," the officer declared, reading from a laminated card. "You are under arrest for attempted grand larceny, burglary, extortion, witness intimidation, and felony assault."

As they dragged Margaret toward the bedroom door, she twisted around, glaring at Hannah with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You ruined my life!" Margaret screamed, her voice echoing down the hallway. "You worthless, arrogant little bitch! You destroyed my family!"

Hannah stood up slowly from her armchair, walking over to stand beside Daniel. He wrapped a protective arm around her waist, holding her close against his chest.

Hannah looked at the woman who had tormented her, abused her, and tried to destroy her child.

"You destroyed your own family, Margaret," Hannah said calmly, her voice carrying an absolute, unbreakable strength. "We just survived you."
