Chapter 8 - Reclaiming the Past
Six weeks later, the final legal resolutions were executed in court.
Under a comprehensive plea agreement negotiated by the District Attorney's office, Marcus Vance pleaded guilty to federal racketeering and wire fraud, receiving a fifteen-year sentence in a federal penitentiary.
Vanessa Carter, agreeing to testify against Margaret, pleaded guilty to accessory charges and corporate fraud. She received a five-year suspended sentence with three years of mandatory probation, community service, and full financial restitution, stripping her of every cent she had received from Apex Horizon.
Margaret Carter refused every plea offer, insisting on going before a jury.
The trial lasted three days. It took the jury less than forty-five minutes to return a verdict of guilty on all counts.
The judge sentenced Margaret Carter to twenty-two years at the Taycheedah Correctional Institution, without the possibility of parole for fifteen years.
Because Margaret had attempted to use Daniel and Hannah's house as fraudulent collateral, the court ordered her remaining personal assets—including her late husband's remaining pension funds—permanently forfeited to Hannah as civil restitution for intentional infliction of emotional distress and medical damages.
Sitting in Marcus Thorne’s law office downtown, Hannah and Daniel reviewed the final financial settlement papers.
"Hannah," Marcus explained, pushing a check across the desk. "This represents the final liquidation of Margaret’s forfeited assets after court fees. Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars."
Hannah looked at the check, then at Daniel.
"We don't want that money for ourselves, Marcus," Hannah said softly.
Daniel nodded in agreement. "We want to use it to establish a foundation."
"What kind of foundation?" Marcus asked, intrigued.
"The Rosalind & Caleb Carter Restitution Fund," Hannah declared clearly. "A non-profit trust dedicated to providing legal aid and emergency housing for pregnant women facing domestic abuse and financial exploitation."

Marcus looked at the young couple with profound respect. "That is a remarkable legacy, Hannah. Your mother-in-law tried to steal your home, and you're using her money to build shelters for others."
"Margaret thought money bought power," Hannah said quietly. "We want to prove that truth buys peace."
