Chapter 6 - The Fall of Apex

By Friday morning, news of the massive corporate bust hit the front pages of the Oakridge Daily and local news networks across the state:
STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL UNCOVERS TWO-MILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD SYNDICATE; FORMER SOCIALITE AND BUSINESS PARTNER ARRESTED IN EXTORTION PLOT.
Inside the State Supreme Court building in downtown Oakridge, the legal aftermath unfolded with devastating speed.
Judge Harrison presided over an emergency bail hearing for Margaret Carter, Marcus Vance, and Vanessa Carter. Sitting in the prosecution gallery were Hannah, Daniel, and Caleb Carter—who had been formally released from state custody two hours earlier, all charges against him officially dismissed with prejudice.
Caleb wore a clean charcoal suit bought for him by Daniel. He sat between his brother and sister-in-law, his face clear of shame for the first time in six months.
At the defense table, Margaret sat in a orange prison jumpsuit, her wrists and ankles shackled. Her expensive hair was unkempt, her face pale and sunken. Beside her, Marcus Vance sat with his head down, refusing to look at the gallery, while Vanessa sobbed quietly into a paper handkerchief.
The Assistant State Attorney General stood before the bench.
"Your Honor," the prosecutor declared, gesturing toward a mountain of evidence binders on the table. "The state presents complete forensic data retrieved from the defendants' personal devices, proving a coordinated, multi-year criminal conspiracy."
"The defendants not only embezzled over two million dollars from innocent home buyers through Apex Horizon, but they also systematically framed Caleb Carter, attempted to fraudulently steal the real property of Hannah and Daniel Carter, and executed a physical assault against a pregnant woman to force compliance."
Judge Harrison reviewed the documents, his expression turning increasingly stern and disgusted.
"This court finds the evidence presented by the prosecution to be overwhelming," Judge Harrison stated, his voice booming through the courtroom. "The level of cruelty and calculation demonstrated by defendant Margaret Carter against her own children is frankly abhorrent."
He struck his gavel down hard against the wooden block.
"Bail is denied for Margaret Carter and Marcus Vance. They will remain in maximum-security remand pending trial. Defendant Vanessa Carter’s bail is set at five hundred thousand dollars, contingent upon full surrender of her passport and electronic monitoring."
Vanessa gasped, looking toward Daniel with pleading eyes. "Daniel! Please! I’m pregnant too! You can't let them leave me in jail! Help me!"
Daniel didn't blink. He looked at his sister-in-law with complete indifference.
"You locked the door, Vanessa," Daniel said quietly, his voice carrying clearly across the bar. "Now you get to stay behind it."
As the bailiffs led the three defendants away through the heavy iron side doors, Margaret turned her head to scream one final curse at her sons, but the heavy doors slammed shut, cutting off her voice forever.
Caleb turned to Hannah, tears shining in his eyes. He took her hands in his, bowing his head deeply.
"Hannah... I can never apologize enough for what my mother did to you," Caleb whispered, his voice trembling. "I was blind. I let her use me, and it almost cost you your life."

Hannah smiled gently, placing a hand over his. "You didn't do this, Caleb. You were a victim too. But now it's over. We're going to rebuild together."
Daniel placed a strong hand on his younger brother's shoulder. "Come on, Caleb. Let's go home."
