Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Manor

Heavy tactical boots hit the marble floor in rapid succession as four black-clad operatives from Vanguard Security—my private, off-the-books security detail—descended from tactical ropes attached to the vaulted ceiling.

Within three seconds, Marcus and Thomas were slammed face-first onto the marble, their weapons disarmed and kicked across the floor.

Nora screamed, backing up against the mahogany grand staircase, her hands clutching her throat. "Julian! What are you doing?! I am your fiancée! I love you!"

"You poisoned my wife, burned my home, stole my infant daughter, and forced her into servitude in my own house under my very nose," I said, walking slowly toward her, each step echoing like a death knell in the cavernous foyer.

The operative lead, a hardened veteran named Vance, stepped up beside me, his weapon trained squarely on Nora’s chest. "Orders, Mr. Vance?"

"Check the teacup," I commanded without taking my eyes off Nora.

Vance knelt, pulled a chemical test strip from his tactical vest, and dabbed the spilled liquid soaking into the rug. Within two seconds, the strip turned a deep, neon violet.

"Potassium cyanide, sir," Vance reported grimly. "Lethal dose. You would have been dead before the cup hit the floor."

Nora’s knees gave out. She slid down the mahogany banister, landing heavily on the floor, her eyes darting frantically toward the front doors. "Julian... please... I did it for us! Amelia didn't appreciate you! She was going to leave you! She was going to take the family money and run to Europe! I saved you!"

"Amelia loved me with every breath she had," I said, my voice cold as absolute zero. "And you... you are a parasite who lived in her shadow."

I turned to Vance. "Take her to the secondary basement vault. Do not call the police yet. The police in this county are on her father’s payroll. I want this house locked down. No one enters, no one leaves."

"Julian! You can't do this! My father will destroy you!" Nora screamed as two operatives dragged her backward toward the basement doors, her nails scraping uselessly against the polished floorboards. "You'll never prove it! That video is fake! It's a deepfake!"

Her screams faded as the heavy steel blast doors of the lower vault slammed shut, sealing her in darkness.

I turned back to Lily, who was trembling in my arms, staring wide-eyed at the armed men occupying the house. I gently smoothed her tangled brown hair away from her forehead, kissing the bruise where Nora had struck her.

"Vance," I said softly.

"Sir?"

"Call Dr. Mercer. Have her bring a full pediatric ICU team to the main guest wing. Now."
