Chapter 4 - The Patriarch’s Shadow

At 2:00 AM, the heavy oak doors of my private study swung open. Vance walked in, holding a glass of scotch, which he set on the desk in front of me alongside a black leather ledger.

"We cracked the secondary partition on the phone," Vance said, leaning over the mahogany desk. "It wasn't just the video of Amelia’s murder. There are over fifty recorded phone calls between Nora and her father, Arthur Sterling."

Arthur Sterling. The former Senator. The chairman of Sterling Global Logistics. A man whose political and financial empire spanned three continents—and my former father-in-law.

"Arthur knew," I said, my fingers tightening around the heavy glass.

"He didn't just know; he ordered it," Vance said, opening the ledger to reveal printed transcripts of encrypted voice calls. "Amelia had discovered that her father was using her mother's charitable foundation to launder money for international weapons cartels. She was going to the Department of Justice three days after the fire."

I closed my eyes, the bitter piece of the puzzle finally falling into place. Amelia hadn't died in an accidental fire. She had been executed by her own father, who then used his second daughter, Nora, to secure Amelia’s share of the Sterling trust through our marriage.

"And Lily?" I asked, my voice dangerously low.

"Arthur wanted the baby dead that night," Vance replied. "Nora kept her alive as an insurance policy. If you ever found out the truth or tried to strip Nora of her inheritance, she was going to use the child as leverage against her father. She kept Lily in the servant quarters as a pawn."

A quiet knock at the door interrupted us. One of my guards stepped in, carrying an encrypted satellite phone.

"Sir," the guard said. "It's Arthur Sterling. He's calling on the private executive line."

I picked up the phone, pressing it to my ear. I didn't speak. I waited.

"Julian," Arthur’s deep, booming voice echoed through the speaker—the voice of a man accustomed to commanding kings and senators. "I understand there has been a... disturbance at the manor tonight. Nora’s tracking device went dark two hours ago, and my team tells me your security detail has locked down the perimeter."

"She’s in my basement, Arthur," I said quietly.

Silence stretched across the line for three agonizing seconds.

"Julian," Arthur’s voice softened into a fatherly, persuasive purr. "Nora has always been emotional. Unstable, even. If she did something foolish—"

"She gave me potassium cyanide in a silver teacup, Arthur," I interrupted. "The same mixture you ordered for Amelia."

Arthur didn't gasp. He didn't deny it. A man of his level didn't waste breath on lies when the cards were on the table.

"Amelia was a tragedy, Julian," Arthur said coolly. "She lacked the vision required for the world we operate in. But you... you have potential. You built an empire of your own. Let's not let female hysteria ruin a partnership that could dominate the eastern seaboard."

"I have my daughter, Arthur," I said softly.

A long, heavy breath came over the phone. "The child lived?"

May you like

"She’s upstairs sleeping in her mother's bed," I said. "And tomorrow morning, every federal prosecutor from D.C. to New York will have the audio recordings of your voice ordering her execution."

"You won't make it to sunrise, Julian," Arthur said, his tone dropping all warmth, revealing the cold serpent beneath. "Check your security cameras."
