Chapter 7 - The Reckoning at Pier 42

Flashing red and blue lights suddenly cut through the thick sea fog from every direction.

Ten heavy tactical vehicles from the FBI, flanked by fifty state police cruisers and armored SWAT vans, poured onto the docks, blocking every exit point from the harbor. Searchlights from two Coast Guard cutters ignited on the water, pinning The Sovereign in a blinding beam of white light.

"Arthur Sterling!" an FBI negotiator’s voice boomed over a loudspeaker. "This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation! Step away from the railing and put your hands on your head! Your vessel is surrounded!"

On the upper deck, Arthur froze. He slowly turned back to look out over the pier.

I stepped out from behind the lead SWAT vehicle, wearing my long coat, flanked by Vance and two federal prosecutors holding thick stacks of warrants.

Nora looked up from the ground, her face covered in dirt and tears, staring at me as if I were a ghost. "Julian...?"

"It's over, Arthur," I called out, my voice steady and clear across the water. "Every bank account in Switzerland, Panama, and the Cayman Islands under your control was frozen by the Department of Treasury thirty minutes ago. Your board of directors has revoked your chairman status, and your private security firm has been declared a domestic terror organization."

Arthur’s face paled under the harsh glare of the Coast Guard searchlights. The glass of scotch slid from his fingers, shattering on the teak deck beneath his boots.

"You..." Arthur rasped, his voice losing every trace of its regal authority. "You couldn't have bypassed my encryption..."

"Amelia did it four years ago, Arthur," I said, taking a step forward onto the gangway. "She saved every master key to your servers on a hidden partition inside her wedding ring. The ring I wore every day since she died. All I needed was the final video from Lily’s phone to complete the chain of custody."

Arthur looked at his two bodyguards. Both men slowly raised their hands into the air, dropping their weapons onto the deck, refusing to die for a dead billionaire.

Nora scrambled backward on her hands and knees, trying to crawl toward me, her eyes wide with hysterical begging. "Julian! Julian, save me! He made me do it! It was all Arthur! He threatened to kill me if I didn't poison the tea! Julian, please!"

I looked down at her as two federal agents stepped forward, pulling her up by her arms and slapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

"You slapped my daughter," I said, looking her dead in the eye as she wept. "You forced her to live like an animal in her own home. You will spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security cell thinking about the teacup you handed me."

"Julian! No! Please!" Nora shrieked as she was dragged toward the back of a police van.

Up on the deck of the yacht, FBI agents swarmed the gangway, forcing Arthur Sterling to his knees, pinning his arms behind his back. As they pulled him up to lead him away, Arthur locked eyes with me one last time.

"You destroyed my family, Julian," Arthur spat, blood dripping from his lip where he had bitten it during the struggle.

"No, Arthur," I said softly, turning my back on him. "You destroyed your own family. I just saved mine."
