Chapter 9 - The Legacy Rebuilt

Six months later.
The old Blackwood Manor—the house where so much pain had lived—was no more.
I had ordered the ancient marble structure torn down to its foundations. In its place, on the high bluff overlooking the river, stood a magnificent timber-and-glass home designed by world-renowned architects. It was a place filled with natural sunlight, open spaces, wide playrooms, and massive windows that let the morning sun fill every corner.
It was a Sunday morning.
The kitchen smelled of freshly made blueberry pancakes, warm syrup, and fresh orange juice.
I stood at the wide marble island, wearing a casual sweater and jeans, flipping pancakes onto a large porcelain plate. Beside me, sitting on a high stool, was Lily, wearing a little chef's apron, carefully placing strawberry slices onto each pancake with focused concentration.
"Is this one for Uncle Vance?" Lily asked, holding up a pancake decorated with a smiley face made of whipped cream.
"That one is definitely for Vance," I chuckled, turning to see Vance walking through the back glass doors, wearing a simple polo shirt instead of his usual tactical gear. Over the past nine months, Vance had transitioned from my security director to the operations manager of our new family foundation.
"Morning, boss. Morning, Little Chef," Vance smiled, setting a stack of legal files on the edge of the counter.
"No work talk today, Vance," I warned playfully, sliding a plate of pancakes toward him. "It's Sunday."
"Not work, Julian," Vance smiled warmly, sliding a single photo toward me. "The new children's sanctuary in South Carolina opened its doors this morning. Fifty children who were freed from the Sterling labor ring were moved into their new homes today. All expenses paid by the Amelia Foundation."
I picked up the photograph. It showed a bright, sunny dormitory filled with clean beds, toys, and smiling children being cared for by gentle nurses and teachers.
I looked at Lily, who was currently laughing as she tried to feed a piece of strawberry to her puppy beneath the table.

"We turned the ashes into a garden," I murmured softly.
"You gave them a future, Julian," Vance said quietly. "Just like you gave her one."
