Chapter 3 - The Broken Butterfly

An hour later, the master suite of the east wing—a room that had remained locked and pristine since Amelia’s death—was lit by soft, warm golden lamps.

Dr. Mercer, a trusted family physician who had known my family for twenty years, finished adjusting an IV drip attached to Lily’s tiny wrist. The little girl had been bathed, dressed in a soft silk nightgown, and tucked beneath three layers of heated down comforters. She was sound asleep, holding tight to a plush velvet bear that had once belonged to her mother.

I sat in the armchair beside the bed, holding Lily’s small, bruised hand in both of mine, never letting go.

Dr. Mercer stepped out into the adjacent sitting room and motioned for me to join her. I carefully set Lily’s hand down and walked out, closing the heavy oak door to a small crack.

"How is she, Sarah?" I asked, my voice strained.

Dr. Mercer’s face was grim as she pulled off her medical gloves. "Physically, Julian... it’s bad. She is severely malnourished. She has signs of old, healed fractures in her left wrist that were never set properly. Her skin shows chronic vitamin deficiencies, and she has blunt-force bruising along her torso."

I slammed my fist against the edge of the marble fireplace, the stone cracking under the force, but I didn't feel the pain in my knuckles. "She was four years old, Sarah. Four. And she was living in the servants' quarters beneath the stables."

"She survived, Julian," Dr. Mercer said softly, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. "That little girl is Amelia’s daughter through and through. The fact that she managed to hide that smartphone for four years inside an old wooden bedpost without Nora finding it is nothing short of a miracle."

"How did Nora bring her here without me knowing?" I asked, staring into the dark woods outside the window. "I lived in this house every day."

"Nora brought a crew of 'orphaned household staff' from her family's estate in South Carolina six months after the fire," Sarah explained. "She kept the child isolated, threatened her daily, and told her that if she ever spoke to you, you would kill her. The child thought you were the villain, Julian. Until tonight, when she realized Nora was going to poison you."

My heart shattered all over again. My daughter had spent her life believing her own father was a monster, all while dusting the framed photographs of me that hung in the hallways she was forced to scrub.

"Where is the phone?" I asked.

"Vance has it in the study," Sarah replied. "He’s transferring the encrypted files to a hard drive."

"Keep a nurse in her room at all times," I ordered. "I have a legacy to tear down."
