Chapter 4 - The Return to Palo Alto

The storm over Palo Alto matched the fury inside the black SUV that sped down the highway from San Francisco International Airport.
Rain slammed against the windshield as the vehicle tore through the iron gates of the Hawthorne estate at 4:00 PM.
Inside the back seat, Richard sat in absolute silence. His phone had buzzed six times during the drive—messages from Victoria asking when his flight from London would land, sending him sweet emojis and asking if he wanted her to order dinner. He hadn't answered a single one.
Beside him, Emily adjusted her jacket, her face composed, her heart hammering a steady, rhythmic beat against her ribs.
The SUV ground to a halt outside the grand front porch.
Richard stepped out into the rain without an umbrella, walking toward the double mahogany doors. Emily followed a pace behind him.
Inside, the grand entryway was quiet. Classical music played softly from the built-in speakers, and the scent of expensive scented candles filled the air.
Victoria stood near the grand staircase, wearing a beige silk robe, sipping a glass of white wine while talking on her phone.
"Yes, mother, the Switzerland arrangements are almost complete," Victoria was saying with a light laugh. "Once Richard signs the trust documents next week, he won't even—"
She stopped dead in her tracks.
Richard stood in the archway of the foyer, soaked in rainwater, his dark eyes fixed on her like a predator watching its prey. Behind him stood Emily.
Victoria dropped her wine glass. The crystal shattered across the white marble floor, splashing pale wine across her bare feet.
"R-Richard!" Victoria stammered, her face turning pale as paper. "You're... you're back early! The summit wasn't supposed to end until tomorrow!"
She looked past him to Emily, her shock instantly twisting into venomous rage. "What is she doing here?! Richard, I told you! If that thief comes near this property again—"
"Shut up," Richard said.
The word wasn't shouted. It was spoken with a quiet, icy authority that froze the air in the room.
Victoria blinked, stunned. "What?"
Richard stepped forward, pulling the thick black folder from inside his coat and dropping it onto the marble floor right at her feet, right beside the shattered glass.
"Read it," Richard commanded calmly.
Victoria looked down at the folder, her lip trembling slightly. "Darling... what is this? What lies has this woman been telling you?"
"I said read it, Victoria!" Richard roared, the sound echoing off the high ceilings like a clap of thunder.
Victoria flinched, dropping to her knees on the marble floor, frantically flipping open the damp folder. As her eyes scanned the wire transfers, the bank ledgers, and the printed emails to the Swiss boarding school, her composure completely disintegrated.
"Richard... listen to me," Victoria gasped, scrambling backward on her hands and knees away from him. "It's... it's not what it looks like! I was just researching schools for their future! The money... the money was for investment properties for the boys' trust!"
"Where are my sons?" Richard asked, taking another step toward her, ignoring her frantic excuses entirely.
"They're... they're upstairs in their room," Victoria sobbed, panic choking her voice.
"Mrs. Gable!" Richard called out sharply.
The kitchen doors swung open immediately. Mrs. Gable stood there, tears of relief in her eyes as she saw Emily standing in the foyer.
"Bring my sons down," Richard ordered softly.
"Right away, Mr. Hawthorne," Mrs. Gable said, hurrying up the grand staircase.
Richard turned his eyes back to Victoria, who was now weeping openly on the floor, her silk robe ruined by the spilled wine.
"You stole from my company," Richard said, his voice flat. "You attempted to traffic my children out of the country under false pretenses. And you framed an innocent woman who has given three years of her life to keeping this family alive."
"Richard, please!" Victoria begged, reaching out to touch his shoe. "I love you! I did it for us! Those boys... they're a constant reminder of your ex-wife! You can't heal while they're here!"
Richard stepped back, avoiding her touch as if she were poisonous.
"I will never heal from my wife's death," Richard said quietly, looking at her with pure, unadulterated disgust. "But my sons are the only good thing she left in this world. And you tried to take them from me."
He looked toward the front entrance, where two uniformed Palo Alto police officers stepped through the open doors, accompanied by Richard’s head of corporate security.
"Officers," Richard said, pointing down at Victoria. "This woman has committed corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and filing a false police report regarding the theft of a Rolex watch. Take her away."
"Richard! NO! You can't do this to me!" Victoria screamed as the officers stepped forward, pulling her up from the floor and securing steel handcuffs behind her back. "I'm Victoria Lane! My father will sue you! You'll regret this!"
Her screams faded down the driveway as the officers led her out into the pouring rain.

A heavy, profound quiet fell over the foyer.
Then came the soft, hesitant sound of tiny footsteps at the top of the grand staircase.
