Chapter 4 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Emily looked up.
At the top of the stairs stood Ethan, Noah, and Liam. They were wearing their matching pajamas, their eyes wide and swollen from hours of crying, their small hands gripping the wooden railing.
When Noah’s eyes landed on Emily, his breath hitched.
"Miss... Miss Emily?" Noah whispered, as if afraid she was a ghost that would vanish if he spoke too loudly.
Emily’s heart swelled so fast she felt tears prickling her eyes. She took two quick steps to the foot of the stairs, opening her arms wide.
"I told you I wouldn't leave you, sweethearts," Emily called out softly.
A chorus of wild, joy-filled shrieks echoed through the mansion.
"MISS EMILY!"
All three boys flew down the grand staircase, their bare feet slapping against the marble steps, completely ignoring their father as they threw themselves into Emily’s arms. They slammed into her, their small bodies hugging her waist, her neck, her arms, burying their faces into her coat, sobbing uncontrollably.
"You came back! You came back!" Ethan cried, kissing her cheek over and over again.
"We missed you so much!" Liam wailed, holding onto her jacket with all his strength.
Emily dropped to her knees on the floor, pulling all three of them into a tight, desperate embrace, kissing their heads, wiping their tears, holding them close against her chest.
"I'm here, boys," Emily whispered, crying softly into Noah's hair. "I'm right here. Nobody is ever sending you away. I promise."
Standing a few feet away, Richard watched the scene.
He saw his three sons—boys who had always been quiet, distant, and timid around him—clinging to this woman as if she were the center of their universe. He saw the pure, unselfish love shining in Emily’s eyes, and he realized with terrifying clarity how close he had come to destroying everything that truly mattered.
He took a slow, hesitant step forward, dropping to one knee beside them on the marble floor.
The boys fell silent, pulling slightly closer to Emily, looking at their father with cautious, uncertain eyes.
Richard felt a sharp, agonizing stab of guilt in his chest. He reached out a large, calloused hand, hesitating for a second before gently placing it on Ethan's small shoulder.
"Boys..." Richard’s voice broke, tears finally spilling down his cheeks for the first time in three years. "I'm... I'm so sorry. Daddy made a terrible mistake. A terrible, foolish mistake."
Ethan looked at his father’s wet face in shock. He had never seen his father cry. Slowly, Ethan reached out his small hand and touched Richard’s cheek.
"Are you sad, Daddy?" Ethan asked quietly.
"I am so sorry, Ethan," Richard sobbed softly, pulling Ethan, Noah, and Liam into his massive arms, embracing them tightly for the first time since their mother had died. "I promise you... I will never let anyone hurt you again. I promise."
Emily sat back slightly, watching the father and his sons holding each other in the middle of the foyer.
She smiled through her tears, quietly standing up to give them privacy, stepping back toward the kitchen doors.
"Emily," Richard’s voice called out.
She paused, looking back.
Richard stood up, holding Liam in his arms while Ethan and Noah held his legs. He looked at Emily with an expression of deep, overwhelming gratitude and humility.
"Don't go," Richard begged softly. "Please. Stay."

Emily looked at the three boys pleading with their eyes, then at Richard.
"I'm not going anywhere, Richard," Emily said warmly. "We have a lot of work to do."
