Chapter 7 - The Gala of Redemption

Six months later.

The Grand Ballroom of the San Francisco Fairmont Hotel was bathed in golden light. Hundreds of high-society figures, corporate titans, and tech executives gathered for the annual Bay Area Children’s Charity Gala.

At the center of attention was Richard Hawthorne.

He stood near the grand staircase, looking impeccably handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. Beside him stood Emily, looking breathtaking in an off-the-shoulder emerald green silk gown, her blonde hair falling in elegant waves down her back.

Standing between them, dressed in tiny matching tuxedos with black bow ties, were Ethan, Noah, and Liam.

Six months ago, the high-society rumors had speculated that Richard Hawthorne was ruined—that his fiancée had defrauded him and his domestic life was in shambles. Tonight, he entered the ballroom not as a cold, isolated billionaire, but as a glowing, devoted family man.

"Mr. Hawthorne! Over here!" photographers called out, flashbulbs popping across the room.

Richard held Emily’s hand tightly in his, his fingers intertwined with hers, while his other hand rested proudly on Ethan’s shoulder.

A prominent local news anchor approached them with a microphone and a cameraman. "Mr. Hawthorne, you look incredible tonight! And this must be Miss Emily Carter—the woman credited with restructuring your domestic charitable foundation!"

"She didn't just restructure my foundation, Sarah," Richard said into the microphone, his voice echoing clearly across the broadcast feed. "She restructured my entire life."

He looked down at Emily, his eyes filled with public, unapologetic pride.

"Three years ago, I was lost," Richard declared to the crowd of onlookers. "I thought success was measured in stock prices and corporate acquisitions. I was blind to what was happening in my own home. Emily showed me that real strength comes from protecting the people you love, standing up for truth, and never allowing lies to dictate your life."

The crowd applauded warmly, several prominent board members nodding in deep respect.

Beside them, Liam tapped Richard’s leg. "Daddy, can we get ice cream now?"

The entire crowd laughed gently.

Richard dropped to one knee right there on the velvet carpet, unbothered by his designer suit, pulling Liam into a hug. "After the speeches, buddy. I promise."

As the event continued, several high-society women who had once sneered at Emily as "the maid" approached her with warm, polite smiles, eager to gain her favor. Emily treated each of them with graceful, calm, and distant politeness, completely unbothered by their superficiality.

Later in the evening, as the music played softly, Richard led Emily out onto the private balcony overlooking the glittering lights of San Francisco.

The night air was cool, but warm heaters kept the stone terrace comfortable.

"You handled the vultures well," Richard smiled, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"I’ve spent three years managing three energetic five-year-olds, Richard," Emily laughed softly, leaning back against his chest. "A room full of corporate socialites is easy."

Richard quieted down, turning her gently in his arms so she faced him. He reached into his tuxedo pocket, pulling out a small, black velvet box.

Emily’s breath caught in her throat.
