Chapter 8 - The Question on the Terrace

The world seemed to stop.
The faint sound of classical music drifted from the ballroom behind them, but all Emily could see was the man standing in front of her.
Richard opened the velvet box. Inside rested a breathtaking, custom-cut oval diamond ring, set on a thin band of polished platinum. It was simple, timeless, and completely devoid of vulgar ostentation—a ring designed specifically for her.
Richard dropped to one knee on the marble balcony terrace.
"Emily," Richard said, his deep voice thick with emotion, looking up at her with raw vulnerability. "Three years ago, you walked into my house as a quiet young woman who needed a job. You ended up becoming the soul of my home."
He took her hand, his fingers warm against her trembling skin.
"You fought for my sons when I was too blind to see they were in danger. You brought light back into a house that had been dark for years. You taught me how to be a real father, and you taught me how to love again."
He looked directly into her eyes, tears glistening in his own.
"I don't offer you a perfect life, Emily. I offer you my whole heart, my eternal loyalty, and a promise that I will spend every day of my life making sure you feel loved, respected, and cherished. Will you make me the happiest man alive? Will you marry me?"
Emily covered her mouth with both hands, tears of pure, overwhelming joy streaming down her cheeks.
Before she could speak, the balcony doors clicked open slightly.
Three small heads poked out through the door.
"Say yes, Miss Emily!" Ethan yelled out.
"Please say yes!" Noah chimed in.
"We want you to be our real mommy!" Liam added, clapping his hands franticly.
Richard laughed softly, looking back at his sons, then back up at Emily with a hopeful, nervous smile.
Emily wiped her tears, dropping to her knees on the balcony terrace right in front of Richard, throwing her arms around his neck and kissing him with all the love in her heart.
"Yes!" Emily cried through her tears. "Yes, Richard! A thousand times yes!"
Richard let out a joyful roar, picking her up in his arms and spinning her around on the balcony as the three boys ran out onto the terrace, cheering and throwing their small arms around their legs.

Richard slipped the brilliant diamond ring onto Emily’s finger. It fit perfectly.
He pulled her and all three boys into one massive, tight embrace under the starry San Francisco sky.
