Chapter 7 - The Trial of Whispers

News of the scandal exploded across the city like a bomb.
The arrest of Dr. Harold Vance and the exposure of Vanguard Medical Holdings sent shockwaves through the medical and financial sectors. However, because Damian Marchetti was involved, the public media attempted to spin the story into something sinister.
Tabloids claimed that Damian had hired a poor waitress to act as a surrogate, then used his underworld connections to strip her of her rights. Opposing political figures called for an immediate investigation into the Marchetti household, demanding the triplets be placed in state custody during the legal proceedings.
Inside the estate, the pressure was immense.
"They want to take them, Damian," I said anxiously, pacing the floor of the private study as the television blared news coverage in the background. "The Family Court judge signed a temporary order to place Leo, Mateo, and Clara in a foster facility until the maternity trial!"
Damian turned off the television with a click of his remote. He walked over to me, taking both of my shaking hands in his.
"No one is taking our children, Noelle," he said with absolute conviction.
"Our children?" I repeated, looking up at him.
"Yes," Damian said firmly. "I may not share their blood, but I have loved them from the moment they drew their first breath. And you are their mother by blood and by spirit. I will not allow a corrupt court system to tear us apart after everything we've survived."
"How do we stop a court order?" I asked.
Damian's eyes gleamed with a calculating light. "We don't fight the court, Noelle. We change the rules."
He slid a leather folder toward me on the desk. Inside were legal papers prepared by the top family lawyers in the country.
"This is a joint custody and guardianship declaration," Damian explained. "It legally recognizes you as the biological mother with full parental rights, while establishing me as their legal father and protector. But to make it completely unassailable in court—to ensure no judge or politician can ever touch them again—there is a faster way."
I looked at the second set of documents hidden beneath the first.
It was a marriage license.
"A marriage of convenience?" I whispered.
"A marriage of absolute protection," Damian corrected gently. "As my wife, you inherit full legal immunity within my estate, complete access to my fortune, and undisputed joint custody of our children. No judge in this state would dare break up the Marchetti family once the ring is on your finger."
I looked toward the open door of the nursery, where the sounds of baby babble and soft laughter echoed down the hall.

"I'm not doing this for money or power, Damian," I said softly.
"I know," Damian replied, his voice softening into genuine tenderness. "You're doing it for them. And so am I."
