Chapter 2 - The Poison in the Wine

The night air outside the Vane Manor was crisp and laced with the scent of pine and salt from the nearby coast. Inside the private wing of the estate—a wing that had been locked for four years—a warm fire crackled in the stone fireplace.
Maya was fast asleep on a plush velvet sofa, tucked under a soft cashmere blanket. Her small hands were still wrapped tightly around the worn teddy bear. A medical team had already tended to her superficial scratches, applied a soothing cream to her bruised cheek, and confirmed that she was suffering from mild malnutrition, but was otherwise healthy.
Clara sat in an armchair nearby, a cup of warm tea resting in her lap. She had changed out of her ruined white gown into a simple wool sweater and trousers.
Across from her, Arthur Vane sat in his high-backed leather chair, staring into the flames. His face looked older, tired, but the hazy, confused fog that had plagued his mind for months was gone, replaced by a razor-sharp focus.
"How did you find her, Clara?" Arthur asked softly, his voice echoing in the quiet room.
"Eleanor reached out to me six months ago," Clara replied, taking a slow sip of tea. "She was living under an assumed name in a small fishing village in northern Maine. She was terminally ill—her lungs never fully recovered from the night her boat was bombed."
Arthur closed his eyes, a pained grimace washing over his face. "The boat explosion... the police called it a fuel leak."
"It wasn't a fuel leak," Clara said coldly. "Julian Vance hired a local mechanic to sabotage the engine line. Eleanor realized it three minutes before the engine blew. She managed to grab Maya and jump into the water with a life vest, but her husband... he was caught in the blast."
"And Eleanor spent four years hiding in the shadows, waiting for me to wake up," Arthur whispered, tears slipping down his wrinkled cheeks. "While I was sitting in a hospital room, drinking poisoned tea provided by my own daughter."
"Victoria didn't act alone," Clara reminded him, leaning forward. "Victoria was desperate for your approval, Arthur. Julian exploited that. He convinced her that Eleanor was your favorite, that Eleanor would inherit everything and leave Victoria with nothing. He fed her jealousy until she was willing to murder her own sister."
A knock came at the door. Miles, Arthur's chief of security and the only man in the household who had remained loyal to the old man, stepped into the room.
"Mr. Vane," Miles said grimly. "Julian Vance has left the state. His personal jet took off from Logan Airport forty minutes ago, bound for London."
Arthur didn't flinch. "Freeze his domestic accounts. Issue an international red notice through our legal team. I want every asset associated with the Vance Group tied up in litigation by morning."
"It's already done, sir," Miles nodded. "However... we have a problem regarding the board meeting tomorrow."
"What problem?" Arthur asked, his eyes narrowing.
"Julian transferred his shares to a third-party offshore trust before he boarded that plane," Miles explained, handing Arthur a tablet displaying financial ledgers. "A trust controlled by your brother, Richard Vane."
Arthur’s hand tightened around the armrest of his chair until his knuckles turned white. "Richard... I should have known. My dear brother has been waiting in the wings for twenty years."
Clara stood up, her investigative instincts instantly flaring. "Richard Vane controls forty percent of the board voting rights. If he combines his shares with Julian’s offshore trust, he can execute a hostile takeover at tomorrow's emergency board meeting—regardless of Maya's inheritance."
"Not if I present Eleanor’s codicil," Arthur countered.
"The codicil gives Maya ownership of the land and physical assets," Clara pointed out, stepping toward the desk. "It doesn't give her immediate voting rights on the corporate board until she turns eighteen—unless a legal guardian is officially appointed by the court."
Arthur looked at Clara, a strange, calculating light appearing in his eyes.
"And who do you think Eleanor designated as Maya's legal guardian in that letter, Clara?" Arthur asked softly.
Clara froze. "What?"
Arthur reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the second page of Eleanor's faded letter—the page Clara had not yet read.
"'In the event of my death,'" Arthur read aloud, his eyes fixed on Clara, "'I hereby appoint Clara Mercer as the sole legal guardian and trustee of my daughter, Maya Vane. I trust no one inside the Vane family. Only Clara possesses the courage and integrity to protect my child from the wolves.'"
Clara felt the air leave her lungs. "Eleanor... named me?"
"She knew you were the only one who couldn't be bought, threatened, or manipulated," Arthur said deeply. He stood up, stepping toward Clara, and held out his hand. "To save this company, and to protect Maya from Richard and Julian, you need to step into that boardroom tomorrow not as an investigative journalist, but as the legal trustee of fifty percent of the Vane Conglomerate."
Clara looked at the sleeping child on the sofa. Maya was breathing softly, her tiny face finally peaceful, safe from the cold, cruel world outside.
Clara had spent her career exposing corrupt tycoons, dismantling criminal cabals, and fighting from the shadows. She had never wanted power, wealth, or corporate titles.

But looking at the bruises on the little girl's face, Clara felt a fierce, maternal protectiveness roar to life inside her chest.
"I'll do it," Clara said, her voice dropping into a register of iron resolve. "I'll sit in that boardroom tomorrow. And I'll tear Richard Vane's empire apart."
