Chapter 6 - The Broken Doll

While the harbor burned, a quiet, sinister movement was taking place at the Vane Manor.

Inside the grand estate, the storm raged outside, knocking out power across the eastern wing. The backup generators hummed to life, casting dim, golden light through the long, marble corridors.

Inside the nursery, Maya was sitting on a plush rug, playing quietly with building blocks. Her grandfather, Arthur, sat nearby in his armchair, reading a storybook aloud to her.

"And then," Arthur said, his voice soft and warm, "the little bear found her way back to the golden castle..."

"Grandfather?" Maya interrupted softly, looking up with wide, serious eyes.

"Yes, my darling?"

"Is Miss Clara coming back tonight?"

Arthur smiled, leaning down to pat her head. "Yes, sweetie. Miss Clara is taking care of some important work at the docks. She'll be back before breakfast."

A quiet knock sounded at the nursery door.

"Enter," Arthur called out.

The door opened, but it wasn't a maid or a guard.

A woman stepped into the room, wrapped in a long wet raincoat, her hair soaked, her face pale and gaunt.

It was Victoria Vane.

Arthur stood up instantly, his face hardening. "Victoria? How are you here? You were remanded to federal custody!"

Victoria let out a bitter, shivering laugh, pulling off her wet hood. "Julian’s lawyers posted my five-million-dollar bail two hours ago, Father. Did you really think a temporary holding cell could keep me away from my home?"

Maya shrank back, clutching her teddy bear, hiding behind Arthur’s legs.

"You are not welcome in this house, Victoria," Arthur said coldly, reaching for the emergency call button on the wall desk. "Leave before I have security throw you out."

"Security?" Victoria sneered, stepping closer. Her eyes were wild, bloodshot, unhinged. "The security guards outside are paid by the Vance Group, Father. You think you control this house? You control nothing!"

She looked past Arthur, her glaring eyes fixing onto the terrified child.

"That brat took everything from me!" Victoria shrieked, her voice echoing unnervingly through the quiet nursery. "My inheritance! My status! My reputation! Everyone is laughing at me!"

"You destroyed yourself with your own greed!" Arthur declared, stepping firmly in front of Maya. "Do not step another inch closer to my granddaughter!"

Victoria pulled a small silver object from her coat pocket—a syringe filled with a clear, lethal fluid.

"I spent eight months giving you small doses of this in your tea, Father," Victoria whispered, a terrifying smile spreading across her lips. "It was supposed to be peaceful. You were supposed to slip away quietly in your sleep, and I was supposed to take my rightful place. But you ruined it! You brought Eleanor's bastard back!"

Arthur’s heart pounded violently against his ribs. He realized with horror that Victoria had lost her sanity completely.

"Victoria... drop the syringe," Arthur warned softly.

"No!" she screamed, lunging forward with the needle aimed straight at Arthur's chest.

Despite his age and weakness, Arthur reacted with the instinct of a man protecting his blood. He grabbed Victoria’s wrist, twisting it away with all his remaining strength.

The syringe flew from her hand, shattering against the stone hearth.

Victoria shrieked in rage, shoving the old man backward. Arthur lost his balance, falling heavily against the coffee table, hitting his head against the sharp edge. He collapsed onto the rug, unconscious, blood trickling from his temple.

"Grandfather!" Maya screamed in terror.

May you like

Victoria turned slowly, her eyes locking onto the terrified five-year-old child.

"Now, you little beggar," Victoria whispered, reaching out her claw-like hands as she stepped toward the trapped child. "Let's see how much your precious Miss Clara can save you now."
