Chapter 8 - The Fall of Julian Vance

One month later.

The high-rise financial district of London was shrouded in a typical gray, drizzling fog.

Inside the luxurious penthouse office of Vance International, Julian Vance sat behind his glass executive desk, sipping fifty-year-old scotch. On the wall monitors behind him, news feeds displayed headlines regarding the stock crash of the Vane Conglomerate's domestic competitors.

Julian smiled, swirling his glass. "Victoria was an idiot," he muttered to himself. "A emotional, incompetent fool."

He reached for his desk phone to call his Swiss broker, intending to finalize the purchase of three distressed shipping companies.

Before he could lift the receiver, his private office doors burst open.

Four officers from Scotland Yard stepped into the office, accompanied by two agents from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Walking behind them, wearing a sharp charcoal suit and an expression of cold triumph, was Clara Mercer.

Julian froze, his glass stopping halfway to his mouth. "Clara Mercer? What is the meaning of this intrusion? This is private British jurisdiction!"

"Not anymore, Julian," Clara said smoothly, stepping into the room and tossing a red-bound leather file onto his glass desk. "An international arrest warrant was approved by the High Court in London one hour ago."

Julian set his glass down, trying to maintain his suave, arrogant composure. "On what grounds? Victoria's wild accusations? She's currently in a mental asylum in Boston. Her testimony is legally useless."

"Victoria didn't give us the evidence, Julian," Clara smiled. "You did."

She clicked a remote control in her hand. The wall monitors behind Julian flickered, changing from stock tickers to encrypted financial ledgers and audio recordings.

Julian’s face went bloodless.

"We recovered the encrypted flash drives from Warehouse 4 before your arsonist could burn them," Clara revealed, taking a step closer to his desk. "Every offshore transfer you made to finance the boat explosion four years ago... every payment made to corrupt the medical staff at Arthur's clinic... and every wire transfer sent to hire the dock arsonist."

A senior FBI agent stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, arson, and international money laundering. You will be extradited to the United States immediately."

Julian stood up frantically, his suave demeanor shattering completely. "This is a setup! My legal team will—"

"Your legal team resigned twenty minutes ago, Julian," Clara interrupted coolly. "When the Vane Conglomerate acquired eighty percent of the Vance Group's debt shares and initiated hostile liquidation proceedings. You're bankrupt, Julian."

Julian backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking like a cornered animal. "I built an empire! You're nothing but a trashy reporter!"

"I was a reporter," Clara corrected, her voice dropping into a register of absolute authority. "Now, I am the CEO of the Vane Conglomerate. And I'm going to make sure you spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary."

The Scotland Yard officers grabbed Julian, forcing his arms behind his back and snapping the steel cuffs onto his wrists.

As he was dragged out of his lavish penthouse, screaming curses at the top of his lungs, Clara walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the misty London skyline.

The long, bloody war that had begun four years ago on a dark boat off the coast of Maine was finally over. The traitors were broken, the empire was secured, and justice had been delivered.

Clara pulled her phone from her pocket and dialed a familiar number.

The line connected instantly.

"Clara?" Arthur’s warm, healthy voice came through the speaker.

"It's done, Arthur," Clara said, a gentle smile spreading across her face. "Julian is in cuffs. He's coming back to Boston."

On the other end of the line, a small, sweet voice echoed through the phone. "Miss Clara! Did you bring me a toy from London?!"

Clara laughed softly, her eyes warming with deep affection. "I brought you the biggest teddy bear in the world, Maya. I'm coming home."
