Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Castle

Six months later.

The sun shone brightly over the Vane Manor gardens, casting a warm, golden glow over blooming rose bushes, manicured lawns, and sparkling marble fountains.

The manor had undergone a complete transformation. The cold, austere atmosphere of the past had been erased, replaced by bright colors, laughter, and life.

A grand celebration was underway in the gardens—the formal announcement of the Eleanor Vane Children's Foundation, a fifty-million-dollar charitable initiative created to protect abused and abandoned children across the country.

Over two hundred guests—diplomats, community leaders, dockworkers, and press—gathered around the outdoor pavilion, clinking glasses of champagne.

Arthur Vane stood near the microphone at the front of the stage. He looked healthier than he had in a decade, dressed in a sharp navy suit, leaning lightly on a simple wooden walking stick—not out of necessity, but as a gentle reminder of his past mistakes.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur spoke into the microphone, his voice strong and clear. "Four years ago, this family was consumed by dark greed, secrecy, and hatred. We lost sight of what truly mattered. But out of the darkness, a brave little girl and an extraordinary woman brought light back into our lives."

The crowd applauded warmly.

Arthur looked toward the side of the stage, gesturing for Clara and Maya to join him.

Clara walked onto the stage, wearing an elegant emerald-green silk dress, her smile warm and confident. Beside her, six-year-old Maya walked proudly, wearing a matching yellow sun hat, holding Clara’s hand tightly with one hand, and holding her new, restored teddy bear in the other.

"Today," Arthur continued, his eyes shining with tears of joy, "we do not just launch a foundation in memory of my late daughter, Eleanor. We celebrate the official court confirmation of Maya's complete adoption and trusteeship under her true guardian, Clara Mercer."

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.

Frank, the head of the Independent Dockworkers Guild, stood in the front row, cheering loudly alongside Miles and the new executive team of the Vane Conglomerate.

Arthur turned to Clara, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "Thank you, Clara. For saving my granddaughter. For saving me."

"We saved each other, Arthur," Clara replied softly, kissing the old man's cheek.

Maya looked up at Clara, pulling on her dress. "Mommy?"

Clara dropped to one knee on the stage, her heart leaping with a joy so profound it made her eyes fill with happy tears. It was the first time Maya had called her 'Mommy'.

"Yes, my sweet girl?" Clara whispered, cupping Maya’s soft, healthy cheek.

"Can we go eat ice cream now?" Maya asked innocently, pointing toward the large ice cream cart parked near the fountain.

Clara laughed, pulling the little girl into a warm, fierce embrace. "Yes, sweetie. All the ice cream you want."
