Chapter 3 - The Wolves at the Table

The top floor of the Vane Tower offered a breathtaking panoramic view of the Boston skyline, but inside the boardroom, the air was suffocating, thick with tension and the scent of expensive cologne and fear.

Twelve board members sat around a massive oval table made of dark Brazilian rosewood. At the head of the table sat Richard Vane—a seventy-year-old man with silver hair, a manicured beard, and eyes as cold and calculating as a shark's.

Richard smiled smoothly, tapping his gold pen against a leather binder. "Gentlemen, ladies. Given the tragic legal developments involving my niece, Victoria, and my brother's failing health, it is our duty to maintain corporate stability. I move that we vote immediately to appoint me as interim Chairman and CEO of the Vane Conglomerate."

"Seconded," one of Richard’s loyal board members called out instantly.

"Let's bring it to a vote," Richard declared, rising slightly from his chair, a triumphant glint in his eye. "All those in favor—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a loud, resounding thud.

The board members turned in shock.

Clara Mercer stepped into the room. She was clad in a sharp, tailored black suit, her dark hair pulled back into a slick, professional bun. She carried a leather briefcase in one hand, her posture radiating absolute power and cold composure.

Beside her walked Miles, flanked by two corporate attorneys carrying stacks of sealed blue folders.

Richard’s smile vanished, replaced by an expression of sharp annoyance. "Miss Mercer. This is a private executive board meeting. Security, escort this woman out."

"Touch me, Richard," Clara said smoothly, stepping directly to the foot of the long table, "and you'll be joining your accomplice Julian Vance on the FBI's most wanted list."

A loud wave of murmurs broke out among the board members.

"What is the meaning of this?" one elderly board member demanded. "Where is Arthur?"

"Arthur Vane is currently resting at his estate under medical supervision," Clara announced, dropping her briefcase onto the table with a heavy thud. "And he has signed over full power of attorney and trusteeship of the majority share block to me."

Richard let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "To you? You're a disgraced journalist! You have no legal standing in this company! The shares belong to the estate, and as senior family member—"

"The shares do not belong to the general estate, Richard," Clara interrupted, her voice cutting through his protest like a razor. She opened her briefcase and pulled out a stack of certified court documents, slapping them down in front of each board member. "They belong exclusively to Maya Eleanor Vane—the legitimate daughter of Eleanor Vane."

"Eleanor's daughter is a myth!" Richard snapped. "A street child brought in to delay this vote!"

"The Massachusetts Probate Court formally validated Maya Vane's birth certificate and DNA profile three hours ago," Clara said, leaning forward, resting her hands flat on the rosewood table. "As her legally designated guardian under Eleanor Vane’s court-approved will, I now control fifty-two percent of the voting shares of this conglomerate."

Richard went pale, but he quickly tried to regain his composure. "Even if the child is legitimate, a trustee cannot block a board vote without court authorization!"

"I don't need to block the vote, Richard," Clara smiled—a cold, lethal smile that made several board members visibly uncomfortable. "I am calling a new vote right now."

She looked around the table, her piercing blue eyes locking onto each board member individually.

"Under Section 4 of the Vane Corporate Charter, the majority shareholder holds the right to immediately terminate any executive officer suspected of gross negligence, fraud, or treason against the company," Clara declared. "I move to immediately remove Richard Vane from the board of directors, freeze his executive compensation, and launch a full forensic audit into his offshore transactions with the Vance Group."

"You can't do this!" Richard roared, slamming his fists onto the table as he stood up. "I built this company! You're an outsider! A nobody!"

"Vote," Clara commanded softly, ignoring Richard's outburst. "All those in favor of removing Richard Vane... raise your hands."

For five agonizing seconds, no one moved. The board members looked at Richard, then looked at Clara, calculating where the power now lay.

Slowly, the elderly board member who had asked about Arthur raised his hand.

Then another hand went up. Then three more. Within ten seconds, nine of the twelve board members had raised their hands.

Richard stood frozen, his mouth open, his face turning a deep, dangerous purple. "You snakes... you ungrateful bastards!"

"The vote passes," Clara said calmly. "Miles, please escort former director Richard Vane off the premises. And make sure he doesn't take a single file from his office."

Two large security guards stepped into the room, grabbing Richard by the arms.

"This isn't over, Mercer!" Richard snarled, thrashing against the guards' grip as he was forced toward the exit. "Julian Vance still controls the shipping logistics! He has the keys to the harbor contracts! Without him, your ships won't leave the docks! You'll be bankrupt in a month!"

"Then I suggest you watch the news at noon, Richard," Clara replied coolly as the doors closed behind him. "Because Julian's empire is already burning."
